WHAT IS POLLUTION Pollution is the introduction of harmful materials into the environment. These harmful materials are called pollutants. Pollutants can be natural, such as volcanic ash. They can also be created by human activity, such as trash or runoff produced by factories. Pollutants damage the quality of air, water, and land.
TYPES OF POLLUTION There are five types of Pollution: Air Pollution Water Pollution Noise Pollution Land Pollution Radio Active Pollution. We’re going to
AIR POLLUTION Air is considered safe when it contains no harmful dust and gases. Atmosphere is the life blanket of Earth. It is therefore essential that we know more about the atmosphere and the ways in which it is polluted.
CAUSES OF AIR POLLUTION This diagram shows which are the main sources of Air Pollution. They can be both natural or generated by humans.
EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION Air Pollution can affect • human health • animals and plants • the atmosphere as a whole. It can also cause • global warming • ozone hole • acid rain • respiratory illnesses
HOW TO AVOID AIR POLLUTION

WHAT IS WATER POLLUTION Water pollution is the contamination of water – lakes, rivers, seas, oceans - with undesirable substances which make it unfit for usage and affects its use by alive beings.
Causes of Water Pollution • About 40% of deaths worldwide are caused by Water Pollution. • Water Pollution is caused by organic and inorganic industrial wastes and affluents discharged into rivers.
EFFECTS OF WATER POLLUTION • • • Destruction of biodiversity. Contamination of the food chain. Lack of potable water. Diseases like cholera and malaria Distruction of aquatic life Infant mortality
HOW TO AVOID WATER POLLUTION Ø Be careful about what you throw down your sink or toilet Ø Pick up litter and throw it away in a garbage can. Ø Eat More organic food Ø Try to avoid plastic containers Ø Use environmentally household products Ø Don’t throw litter into rivers lakes or oceans Ø Recycle Ø Save water

WHAT IS NOISE POLLUTION Noise pollution can be defined as any disturbing or unwanted noise that interferes or harms humans or wildlife. Noise pollution can have deleterious effects on human health, wildlife, and environmental quality.
Causes of Noise Pollution • Traffic Noise • Air craft Noise • Noise from construction and civil engineering works. • Noise from the Industries. • Noise from other sources.
EFFECTS OF NOISE POLLUTION • • Hearing loss Irritation Stress High blood pressure Nervousness Sleep disturbance Colour blindness Permanent damage to the voice
HOW TO AVOID NOISE POLLUTION • • Sound affects our ears so avoid loud noise Avoid crackers during festivals or celebrations Use ear protection devices Don’t play music loudly Don’t honk unnecessarily Follow the limit of noise level Stay away from noisy areas

LAND POLLUTION Land pollution is the distruction of the earth’s surface as a result of human activities and their misuse of land resourses. It occures when waste is not disposed off properly. or when humans throw chemicals into the soil.
CAUSES OF LAND POLLUTION Ø Ø Ø Ø Ø Industrial waste Domestic waste Agriculture Construction Sewage waste Soil erosion Deforestation Urbanization Mining and quarrying Overcrowded landfills
EFFECTS OF LAND POLLUTION § Health problems § Developmental damage to children § Effects on wildlife § Climate changes § Effects on tourism § Toxic material in the soil § Environmental impact
HOW TO AVOID LAND POLLUTION Ø Buy products that have little packaging Ø Eat organic foods that are grown without pesticides Ø Buy biodegradable products Ø Reduce waste reusing as much items as you can Ø Recycle paper, glass, plastic, metal Ø Never drop litter

WHAT IS RADIO ACTIVE POLLUTION Radioactive contamination, also called radiological contamination, is the deposition of, or presence of radioactive substances on surfaces or within solids, liquids or gases (including the human body) where their presence is unintended or undesirable.
Causes of Radio Active Pollution Ø Ø Ø Ø Production of nuclear weapons (Ex: Missiles) Decommissioning of nuclear weapons Production of nuclear fuel Radioactive waste Nuclear power plants Medical waste Uranium Mining
EFFECTS OF RADIO ACTIVE POLLUTION Alteration and destruction of cells in living organisms Damage to the soil and plants Makes the air unsafe to breath Illnesses and death Genetic mutations Eyes problems Cancer
HOW TO AVOID RADIO ACTIVE POLLUTION Ø Ø Ø No nuclear power plants Avoid using nuclear weapons Have proper treatment for nuclear waste Reduce mining for uranium to a minimal Education and public awareness Government plans
