Because they sacrifice sovereignty.
Policies & Problems • Single Market • Free trade = no tariffs • Common currency • Pro: Free market = 500 mill. people = $18. 5 trillion (world’s largest) • Con: Sovereign debt crisis = high state debt • PIIGS (Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece, Spain) • austerity required? Germans want austerity! • forced cuts to budgets, social benefits/pensions • Freedom of movement • Freedom to live or work anywhere in EU. • no documentation needed in Schengen area (open borders) • migration from poor East/South → rich West/North • creates nativism in some host countries • Other • Common agricultural, environmental, humanitarian policies • Must meet requirements (stability, democracy, rule of law, etc. ) • No unified foreign policy © Corbis • no combined military (but most are NATO members)
Is the EU a centrifugal or centripetal force for member states?
EU effect on STATE cohesion Centripetal Centrifugal • Rise in nationalist sentiment • EU umbrella allows for regional autonomy which weakens strengthens loyalty to individual states – Policy disagreements at supranational level leads to calls for a return to sovereignty • Brexit, Greek bailout • Nativism – Wealthy regions no longer rely on individual state • Why are we loyal to this state if we have to pay all these taxes? • Catalonia (Spain) • Padania (Italy) – Multinational states threatened by regional nationalism • We can be independent AND still part of EU • UK (Scotland)/Brexit • Belgium
