POLIO END GAME By Suryakant Parab Dist. Polio Plus Chairman District 3141
Congratulations January 13, 2011 • Last polio case detected -2 -yr old girl was paralyzed by polio in Howrah district of West Bengal February 25, 2012 • WHO declared India nonendemic January 13, 2016 • India completes FIVE years without any polio case detected
WPV = Wild Polio Virus c. VDPV = circulating Vaccine-Derived Polio Virus
Challenges • The polio cases represented by the remaining one percent are the most difficult to prevent, • due to factors including – geographical isolation, – poor public infrastructure, – armed conflict and – cultural barriers. • Until polio is eradicated, all countries remain at risk of outbreaks.
Can We be Complacent ? • Despite being declared non-endemic, the risk of polio still persists in India. • Being in the neighbourhood of two polio endemic countries, the risk of importation of polio cannot be ignored. • Earlier, India has exported polio to other countries (Nepal, Tajikistan and Angola). There is a risk of import of poliovirus from the same routes. • Since 2000, about 44 polio free countries have suffered from one or more importations of WPV.
Polio Eradication Strategies
