STRUCTURE AND ORGANIZATION Mexico Population: 118, 397, 000 (2013) 32 States and Health System decentralized Several institutions covering health sector (fragmented) Ministry of Health: “Seguro Popular” covering 50, 000 inhabitants IMSS: Social Security formal economic sector covering 40, 000 ISSSTE: Social Security for governmental employees covering 14, 000 Others coverage systems: Army, Marines, Police, PEMEX, etc. Having prevention and treatment programs addressing NCD Strongest capability at hospitals levels

MAIN ACHIEVEMENTS Signed Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). Taxes to soda-sweetened beverages, fatty foods, snacks, fast food. (810%). National Strategy for Prevention and Control of Overweight, Obesity and Diabetes. To forbid advertising of unhealthy food and beverages addressed to children. New front labelling: calories and percentage/portion and total content To regulate food and beverages sold in schools and promote healthy food and physical activities

CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED Fragmented health system- to unify, then universal access. Weak PHC. Industry interference.

LESSONS LEARNT Bring around the same table: civil society, academia, research institutions, government, international organizations. Coordinate with other governmental sectors different to health sector: Parliament, Education, Treasury, Economy Involve the Media and their Directors. Keep a database and share among participants and policy makers updated evidence.

MAIN NEXT STEPS TO IMPLEMENT THE NATIONAL STRATEGY FOR PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF OVERWEIGHT, OBESITY AND DIABETES.
