POLENTINOS AND SUPERUNDA OR DE OCHOA AGUIRRRE PALACES Esther Velázquez López
POLENTINOS PALACE
It was built in the XVI century by Juan Contreras. Reminding Vasco de la Zarza’s School, it is the only exception in Ávila because of its numerous adornments concerning the family shields.
It has weaponry motifs that stress the warrior spirit of this family in the façade
The façade is built with stone. Two storeys can be seen. There are bricks decorating the windows and a cornice that crosses the gaps in the top storey.
There are different medals in the yard walls showing the different social scales
Francisco de Colmenares, Count of Polentinos, inherited the possessions in 1750. In the XIX century it was residence for the General Novaliches. In 1862 it lodged the Town Hall while the works in the new Consistory House were made. Nowadays it hosts the General Military Archives.
SUPERUNDA OR DE OCHOA AGUIRRE PALACE
Around 1521, a family from Navarra settled in Ávila with the bishop Rodrigo de Marcado and Loyola. In the XVI century the house was reformed by Pedro. Aguirre who was town councillor in Ávila for a long time. At the end of the XIX century it was inherited by José Manso of Velasco and Chaves, Marquis of Bermudo and Count of Superunda.
The façade shows a clearhorizontal character. It is finished off with two towers without defensive value. The decoration is mainly in the gaps in the top storey.
The eccentric location of the door is surprising. This building is in the centre of the town and has suffered few reforms
