POLAR BEARS IN ANTARTICA! BY GRACE BARNES
POLAR BEARS FUR!!!!!! • Polar bears fur consists of 2 layers one soft layer and a hard guard layer. Underneath the soft layer their skin is black which absorbes the sun rays and that is what keeps them warm. Did you know that polar bears have white fur so that they can camouflage into their environment. Their coat is so well camouflaged in Arctic environments that it can sometimes pass as a snowdrift. Interestingly, the polar bears fur has no white pigment; in fact, a polar bears fur is hallow.
FUN FACTS!!!!!!! • . Polar bears are classed as marine mammals because they spend most of their lives on the sea ice of the arctic ocean depending on the ocean for their food and habitat, polar bears are the only bear species to be considered mammals. • As well as reaching speeds up to 6 mph, polar bears can swim for long distances and steadily for many hours to get from one piece of ice to another. • The total population of approximately 26, 000 wild polar bears are divided into 19 units or subpopulations.
THEIR PAWS AND BODY!!!!!!! • The polar bears paws are 12 inches wide and they are flat and they act like paddles in the water. They are round and partially webbed and each toe has a thick, curved and non-retractile claw • Polar bears are well-equipped for living in a harsh environment. They have a layer of 10 cm blubber that helps insulate the polar bears body from the cold, keeping its temperature to 37 degrees. • Did you know that polar bears can grow up to 8 ft?
