Polar bear What keeps a polar bear cool
Polar bear
What keeps a polar bear cool in summer? (怎样使北极熊在夏 天里感觉凉爽?) Wild polar bears live in very cold places. What do they do in a warm-weather zoo?
Part one: Polar bear that live in the wild have a thick(厚的) layer(层) of fat, called blubber(海兽层), to help them stay warm. They get much of this fat from the seals(海豹) they hunt and eat. But polar bears that live in warmer climates(气候) don’t need to eat so much fat. So they don’t develop such a thick layer of blubber. This helps them stay cooler in the zoos where they live.
Part two Zookeepers(动物饲养员) try to keep the polar bear’s zoo home, or habitat(生活环境), as natural(自然的) as possible. For polar bears, this means some special(特别的) things.
How to do: 1. Since polar bears are good swimmers, most zoos have pools(游 泳池) for them to use. Although(虽然) they sometimes move slowly on land, polar bears can move quickly in the water.
2. Polar bears are also good hunters. So zookeepers sometimes hide their food. They also freeze(冷 冻) fish inside blocks(大块) of ice. That way the bears can have a much more interesting feeding experience.
3. Zookeepers at the zoo in California provide( 准备) a real treat(善待) for their polar bears in the middle of each warm summer. They use a special(特别的) machine(机器) to blow fresh snow into the polar bear’s exhibit(展出的地方). The bears have a great time sliding(滑行) and playing on their own snow mountain. Sometimes the bears even dig(挖) a little cave(洞穴) in the snow to go to sleep!
