POINTS LINES AND PLANES Ms K Brown Geometry
POINTS, LINES, AND PLANES Ms. K Brown Geometry High School Math
OBJECTIVES Students will identify and name points, lines, segments, rays, and planes. draw points, lines, segments, rays, and planes. apply basic facts about points, lines, and planes. Common core standards: CC. 9 -12 G. CO. 12
GEOMETRY BASICS Click to watch this video from Holt Mc. Dougal Geometry Chapter 1: Understanding Points, Lines and Planes
POINTS • a dot • Represents a specific location in space • Named by one CAPITAL letter • Example: ∙A
LINES Infinitely long and straight Has no end points Named by two points on line or one lower case letter Example:
COLLINEAR VS NONCOLLINEAR Collinear: Points that lie on the same line Example: Points M, A, & N are collinear Noncolliear: All points do not lie on the same line Example: Points T, I, & C are noncollinear
RAY Has one end point Extends infinitely in one direction Named by its endpoint and a point that it passes through Example: Ray AB SEGMENT Has two endpoints Part of a line or ray Can be measured Named by its endpoints Example: Segment CD
PLANE Flat surface Extends infinitely in all directions Name by a single CAPITAL letter or by 3 noncollinear points Example : Plane KSX or Plane R K X S
COPLANAR Points that lie in the same plane. Example: Points B, C, D are coplanar Point A, B, C, D are noncoplanar A F B D C
GEOMETRY BASIC PRACTICE NAME EACH 1. Three rays. CB, CA, and CD 2. A point on BC. Possible answer: D 3. Coplanar Points. Possible answer: A, B, and C 4. A plane containing E, D, and B. Plane T
