Point of View

Point of View n Point of View is the perspective from which a story is told from. n There are three different kinds of point of view you need to know.

First Person First-person definition is when a story is narrated by only one character at a time, who refers to him- or herself using words and phrases involving "I and/or "we. " This allows the reader or audience to see the point of view (including opinions, thoughts, and feelings) only of the narrator, and no other characters.

First Person n In other words the story is being told by our main character and we will only know their thoughts if they tell us. I am going to break that camera as soon as I can get my hands on it.

First Person Pronouns n n n n n I Me Myself My Mine We Us Ourselves Ours If you see an abundance of these pronouns you will know the story is being told in first person.

Third Person n n He She Himself His Her They Themselves Their If you see an abundance of these pronouns you will know the story is being told in third person.

Third Person There are two different types of third person Let’s start with third person limited

Third Person Limited Third person limited point of view is a method of storytelling in which the narrator knows only the thoughts and feelings of a single character, while other characters are presented externally.

Third Person Limited In other words we are LIMITED to hearing the thoughts and feelings of ONE person Jane thought she was one cool baby in her stunna shades.

Third Person Omniscient: A method of storytelling in which the narrator knows the thoughts and feelings of all, or most, of the characters in the story

Third Person Omniscient In other words, we are an all powerful being able to spy on the thoughts and feelings of MANY people John (the father) thought his son was interested in what he had to say, but Tommy could care less and was just humoring his father.

But how can I easily tell them apart? n There is a very simple process you can take to easily deciding which point of view you are looking at. n Highlight thoughts and emotions green

FIRST Highlight pronouns First Person n n I Me Myself My Mine We Us Ourselves Ours If the majority of pronouns are first person you know that it has to be first person point of view. Third Person n n n If the majority of pronouns are third person you need to narrow it down by taking one more simple step n n He She Himself His Her They Themselves Their

Third Person n How many people’s thoughts or feelings did you highlight? One More than one Limited Omniscient
