Point of View
Dialogue • Dialogue- conversation between characters in a story • “Quotation marks”- signals to the reader that a character is speaking • Example- “Are scribbles of fury allowed? ” Will asked.
Narration • Narration- the narrator speaking in a story • There are NO quotation marks around what the narrator says • Example- “Are scribbles of fury allowed? ” Will asked.
Point of View • Point of view- tells you WHO is narrating a story • Do NOT look at dialogue to figure out the POV. • Look at narration instead.
Signal Words POV Pronouns First Person I, me, my, mine, we, us, ours Third Person he, she, him, her, they, them, characters’ names
First Person • The narrator is a character in the story. • Signal words- I, me, we • Example- I went home. Tim arrived later and asked if I could play. I told him no because I had to study for my test. Tim suggested that we study together. It was a great idea! We both aced our tests!
Third Person • The narrator is an outsider. • Signal words- he, she, they, characters’ names • There are three types of third person narration.
Tips for Identifying POV • Focus on narration, not dialogue. • Always check first person first. It is the easiest to identify. • Ask yourself, “Whose story is the narrator tellinghis or someone else’s? ”
