Point of View An Introduction
Point of View means the author’s choice of narrator. (narrator = the teller of a story)
Three Types of POV n First Person n Third Person Omniscient n Third Person Limited
First Person A character in the story tells the story n Uses I, me, my, we, us n Example: n – I looked at my grandmother, standing there at the top of the stairs. I was so worried she might fall; she wasn’t as steady as she used to be. I was about to offer her my arm when…
Third Person Omniscient n n n Can tell the reader anything, including thoughts and feelings of all characters “God” point of view Example: – John stood next to his grandmother. He wanted to help her down the stairs. Mrs. Smith looked at her grandson, her blue eyes sharp, and moved a strand of hair from her face. She was determined to do this on her own, to prove she wasn't a helpless old lady. . .
Third Person Limited Still a third person narrator, but sticks with one character, sharing only that person’s thoughts and feelings n Example n – John stood next to his grandmother. He wanted to help her down the stairs, remembering how she almost tripped last time. He saw her looking at him, but he wasn’t sure how to help.
What is the point of view? n Rosaura was deeply offended. She thought it unfair of her mother to accuse other people of being liars simply because they were rich. Rosaura wanted to be rich, of course. If one day she managed to live in a beautiful palace, would her mother stop loving her?
What is the point of view? n To discourage his coming with me, I’d run with him across the ends of the cotton rows and careen him around corners on two wheels. Sometimes I accidentally turned him over, but he never told Mama.
What is the point of view? n She liked to grocery shop. She loved it in the way some people love to drive long country roads…. Then one day the bag boy dropped her jar of mayonnaise and that is how she fell in love. He was nervous – first day on the job – and along had come this fascinating girl.
