Descriptive Poetry: l Descriptive poems explore the sensory experience of a moment by evoking all five senses. l Ex: At the Fishhouses Although it is a cold evening, down by one of the fishhouses an old man sits netting, his net, in the gloaming almost invisible, a dark purple-brown, and his shuttle worn and polished. The air smells so strong of codfish it makes one's nose run and one's eyes water. The five fishhouses have steeply peaked roofs and narrow, cleated gangplanks slant up to storerooms in the gables for the wheelbarrows to be pushed up and down on. All is silver: the heavy surface of the sea, swelling slowly as if considering spilling over, is opaque, but the silver of the benches, the lobster pots, and masts, scattered among the wild jagged rocks, is of an apparent translucence like the small old buildings with an emerald moss growing on their shoreward walls.
Cinquain consist of different patterns that include words, syllables, nouns/adjectives. . etc Cinquain Pattern Line 1: One word Dinosaurs Line 2: Two words Lived once, Line 3: Three words Line 4: Four words Line 5: One word Long ago, but Only dust and dreams Remain

Free Verse l Free verse is a literary device that can be defined as poetry that is free from limitations of regular meter or rhythm and does not rhyme with fixed forms. l Such poems are without rhythms and rhyme schemes; do not follow regular rhyme scheme rules and still provide artistic expression. In this way, the poet can give his own shape to a poem how he/she desires.
Assonance l. Assonance is the repetition of rhyming vowel sounds inside the lines of a poem. l. Ex: “Twinkling twilight twice at the edge of night” (Long i)
Consonance l. Consonance is the repetition of consonant sounds either inside the lines of a poem or at the end of a line. l. Ex: "Norm, the worm, took the garden by a storm this morn. "
Concrete Poem l Concrete or shape poetry is poetry in which the typographical arrangement of words is as important in conveying the intended effect as the conventional elements of the poem, such as meaning of words, rhythm, rhyme and so on.
Concrete Poem Example:
Free Verse Poetry l Free verse poetry is a poem that is written without a regular rhyme scheme, meter or form. It often mimics natural speech.
Well, son, I’ll tell you: Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair. It’s had tacks in it, And splinter, And boards torn up, And places with no carpet on the floor— But all the time I’se been a-climbin’ on And reachin’ landin’s And turnin’ corners, And sometimes goin’ in the dark Where there ain’t been no light. So, boy, don’t you turn back. Don’t you set down on the steps ‘Cause you finds it kinder hard. Don’t you fall now— For I’se still goin’, honey, I’se still climbin’, And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.
