TYPES OF POETRY v Free verse – Poetry that has no fixed pattern of meter, rhyme, line length or stanza arrangement. v Limerick- light humorous poem with a regular metrical rhyme scheme v Narrative & Lyrical poetry – refer to your poetry vocabulary for more information v There are many more types of poems these are just the types we will work with

HOW POEMS ARE MEASURED v Most poems are written in “iambic” meter- is a rhythmical organization of verse lines. Iambic is a specific kind of rhythm that alternates between stressed and unstressed syllables. v Ex- page R 13 in literature textbook

RHYME SCHEME v Rhyme Schemes are labeled according to their rhyme sounds. Every rhyme

RHYME SCHEME v Rhyme Schemes are labeled according to their rhyme sounds. Every rhyme sound is given it’s own letter of the alphabet to distinguish it from the other rhyme sound that may appear in the poem. The first type of rhyme sound is designated as A every time that rhyme scheme appears in the poem it is called A. Second sound B, third sound C and so on.

RHYME v End rhyme- rhyme that occurs at the end lines of a poem only v Internal rhyme- rhyme that occurs in the same line v Slant rhyme – when words include sounds that are similar but not identical. v Ex- I sat in the dark Nursing my broken heart (the lines don’t exactly match)
