There are five types of meter we will study: • • • Iamb Trochee Spondee Dactyl Anapest
Stressed (/) vs. Unstressed (U) • Stress = emphasis on a syllable • How are these words stressed? ▫ Record ▫ Photography ▫ Photographic
Stress and Rhythm • Most of the time, stressed and unstressed syllables will occur in a pattern. • There are five types that you should know: iamb, trochee, spondee, dactyl, anapest
Iamb • Two syllable foot that is stressed in the second syllable (unstressed-stressed) • “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day Thou art more lovely and more temperate” ▫ Shakespeare
Trochee • Two syllable foot that is stressed in the first syllable (stressed-unstressed) • “Double, double toil and trouble fire burn and cauldron bubble” ▫ Shakespeare
Spondee • A two syllable foot where both feet are stressed (stressed-stressed) • “White founts falling in the courts of the sun” ▫ Chesterton
Dactyl • A three syllable foot where the first syllable is stressed (stressed-unstressed) • “Out of the cradle endlessly rocking Out of the mockingbird’s throat, the musical shuttle” ▫ Whitman
Anapest • A three syllable foot where the last syllable is stressed (unstressed-stressed) • “Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house” ▫ Anonymous
