Poetry for Kids
Poetry is awesome because there are so many types of poems to read and write. You don’t have to be a good reader to read poems and you don’t have to be a good writer to write poems so that’s why everyone loves poems! Poems can be short or long, funny or sad, silly or serious, and lots, lots more.
Important Poetry Words • Before you begin learning anymore about poetry, you have to understand these words: – Line- a row of words in a poem – Stanza- a group of lines in a poem that are separated by a blank line – Pattern- repetition of lines in a stanza • AABA
What are Poetic Devices? • Poetic Devices: the “features” of poetry. • Poets use certain “features” to write their poems just like non-fiction books have certain features and fiction books have certain features.
Rhyme and Rhythm • Rhyme- having the same sound at the end of two or more words. The words don’t have to be spelled the same at the end of the word. – Example: Mike/ bike sea/ tree • Rhythm- the “beat” of the poem that you hear or feel when the poem is read.
Repetition • Repetition: using the same word, phrase, line or stanza two or more times in a poem – Example: Baa black sheep have you any wool? Yes sir, yes sir three bags full.
Alliteration • Alliteration: having the same sound repeated at the beginning of two or more words. – Example: • Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.
Assonance • Assonance: repetition of the same vowel sound. – Example: Upon an island hard to reach, The East Beast sits upon his beach. Upon the west beach sits the West Beast. Each beast thinks he's the best beast.
Onomatopoeia • Onomatopoeia- a word whose sound is similar to the what is refers to. It “sounds” like the word. – Examples: zoom weee pop
Figurative Language • Figurative Language: an expression that has a different meaning than what the words actually say. – Example: “So hungry I could eat a horse. ” • Simile- An example of figurative language the uses the words like or as. – Example: • “Run like the wind. ” • “As cool as a cucumber. ”
