PMA New Curriculum – 2014 Purpose of study Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

PMA Aims The national curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils: • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately. • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language • can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and nonroutine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

PMA Mathematics is an interconnected subject in which pupils need to be able to move fluently between representations of mathematical ideas. The programmes of study are, by necessity, organised into apparently distinct domains, but pupils should make rich connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems. They should also apply their mathematical knowledge to science and other subjects. The expectation is that the majority of pupils will move through the programmes of study at broadly the same pace. However, decisions about when to progress should always be based on the security of pupils’ understanding and their readiness to progress to the next stage. Pupils who grasp concepts rapidly should be challenged through being offered rich and sophisticated problems before any acceleration through new content. Those who are not sufficiently fluent with earlier material should consolidate their understanding, including through additional practice, before moving on.

Children should be equipped to decide when it is best to work mentally, use jottings or use a formal written method. Why have a policy? Ensures consistency of approach and clear progression throughout the school

PMA Maths Passport A guide for parents October 2017

PMA What is it? o The Passport was devised by Ray Maher o The aim is for children to develop instant recall skills. o We have adapted the original Passport to meet the needs of children at CKJS.

PMA Why are we using the Passport? o The Passport aims to ensure all children can instantly recall number facts such as number bonds and times tables, without the need to work them out. o These facts can then be confidently applied to solve more complex problems o Ultimately, it aims to make them more efficient and effective mathematicians

PMA What does it look like in school? Each child is working on a passport appropriate for their current knowledge: o Counting: Cheltenham o Number bonds Stage 1: UK, Europe, Asia. o Time Tables Stage 1: Africa, Oceania o Number Bonds Stage 2: 3 x Oceans o Times tables Stage 2: Antarctica, North & South America o Application and Place Value: Globetrotters, Lunar

PMA The Passport in action o Focused tasks. o Specific teaching in Maths lessons or elsewhere in the timetable. o Group work. o Homework.

PMA Assessment o Timed tests. o Adaptations to meet the needs of individual children. o Each target needs to be achieved three times. o Once all targets in a passport have been achieved three times, children will move on to the next Passport.

PMA How can you support your child? o Objectives in planner. o Homework. o Games and practical activities. o Online / Apps. o Keep it fun, short and interactive wherever possible.

PMA How can you help? o Remember to model PMA and Growth Mindset o Praise the effort, not the outcome o Support your child when they are completing homework – but remember they should know how to do it. Please do not teach them methods not shown in the school’s Calculation Policy o If they are stuck on their homework let us know via the Planner o Help them learn their Passport facts – little and often.
