Plural Forms and Apostrophe n Apostrophes are used for two main reasons. 1. They are used to show possession Example: the engineer’s desk 2. to show that words have been contracted. Examples: He's = He is. It’s = It is With contractions, the apostrophe must be placed where the letters or numbers are missing.
Possessive Plural Noun • Possessive plural noun ending with an s, add ‘ only For Example: Engineers’ desks are often full of papers. • Possessive plural noun not ending with an s, add ‘ s For Example: The women’s room is closed today.
Basic Rules 1. Before placing the apostrophe decide whether the possessive noun should be singular or plural. Example: the engineer’s desk 1. If the noun should be plural make it plural first, and then make it possessive. Example: the engineers’ desks 1. Apostrophe -s (‘s) does not make a noun plural. For Example: Mr. Jones’s experiment
Exception Option n Just add the ‘ if all of the following is true – The noun is a name of a person or a thing – Has two or more syllables – Ends with an S sound For Example: Al Martinez’ son is an honor student
