Plumbing Unit Purpose Transporting liquids safely from one
Plumbing Unit
Purpose: • Transporting liquids safely from one point to another for storage, processing, and direct use • Carries fresh water from a source like a well to a fixture. • A drain waste vent carries waste water away to septic tank.
Terminology • Pipe: round/hollow RIGID material • Tubing: round/hollow FLEXIBLE material • Fitting: connecting device – Joins two piece of pipe – Connects a piece of pipe to a fixture, pump
Pipe Size • Pipe size is represented by the inside diameter • Pipe wall thickness (grade) is represented by a ‘schedule #’ - greater number represent greater strength - Ex: 40 - 60 - 80
Plastic Pipe • PVC – (polyvinyl chloride) used mainly for cold water supply, drain waste vents, or irrigation lines • What you’ll use in this class!
Pipe Fittings • Elbow fitting: changes angle/direction of pipe • Tee fitting: allow for branched lines
Pipe Fittings • Male/Female Adapters: used to change the end of a nonthreaded pipe
Pipe Fittings • Reducer: used to change diameter of pipe • Plug: close an opening that is reopened regularly • Cap: closes end of dead end pipe
PVC Pipe Tools • Hacksaw: used to cut pipe to length. – Teeth should be pointing forward – Cut forward, slight downward angle
PVC Pipe Tools • Pipe Cutter: used to cut pipe to length. – Ratchet cutting – Only use on PVC to keep blade true
Primer • Purposes: – clean surface of the pipe –purple color - easily seen by inspector –Prepares pipe surface for bonding with cement = water tight seal
Cement – Not Glue • Provides sturdy/water tight seal when combined with dried primer • Dries and sets fast! • Solvent Welding
Step 1: Primer pipe and fittings
Step 2: After primer dries, apply glue to pipe and fittings
Step 3: Quickly connect pipe to fittings. Seat all the way into fitting!
Things to avoid: • Forgetting primer • Dripping primer down pipe (excess primer) • Excess glue • NOT seating pipe all the way into socket before glue dries
