Plotline of Stuck In Neutral By Brody Markiel
Start/Exposition This story is about A boy named Shawn Mcdaniel and he first mentions that he remembers all that he hears. Shawn says he lives in seattle and he introduces some of his other family members, his mother linda and his sister cindy. The ear represents how he remembers what he hears.
Conflict The Main Problem is that he has cerebral palsy, which is a condition that severely limits muscle movement. Specifically, he has an extreme version that limits ALL muscle movement. This makes him look like a retarded derp on his iq tests. The image is a kid with cerebral palsy, which Shawn is afflicted with.
Rising Action The rising actions include a documentary scene where his father asks about if they should educate people in shawn’s position, cindy having a sleepover, and most notably, the father trying to kill his son to “end his pain”. The knife is commonly the knife associated with murder.
Climax/Falling Action The falling action and climax are lumped into one in this book and it mainly consists of the father trying to not kill his son and him finally thinking that shawn can love back. This is the highest point of drama because it shows shawn and his father having the big finale and if shawn will live or die. The heart represents love. This is where the book ends, and both are squished here.
Resolution The “resolution” consists of absolutely nothing. This is because the author would rather try to sell a sequel rather than end what would have been a truly great story! What, you thought they would resolve the story? No, you have to buy the sequel! This author of this book wants you to buy a sequel to see the ending and resolution! And I will not fall for it!!! The EA logo represents GREEDY BUSINESS PRACTICES LIKE THIS!!!!!!!!!!
Devices One device used in this story is suspense. Throughout the story, shawn thinks his father will kill him, and it looms and becomes more suspenseful, reaching it’s climax in the final scene of the book. This works because early on it is shown that shawn fears death after seeing a dog die. Another device used by the author is irony. The father tries to prevent himself by studying someone Who killed his son, which just encouraged him to continue with killing him.
Themes The theme in this story is the acceptance of one’s fate. One example is how shawn accepts his death before his father decides to (Maybe) spare him and how initially, he would have wanted to run away. As he realized his impending death approached, he was calmed and accepted it.
