Today's 1. goals. . . To learn the definition of organizational self–care. Objectives: 2. To learn why organizational self-care is important. 3. To learn what steps Henry Ford College's Student Services department is taking to implement organizational self-care. 4. To take away one thing you can do today to take care of yourself in the workplace.

Self-care according to Health Outreach Partners is any activity done voluntarily to help maintain

Self-care according to Health Outreach Partners is any activity done voluntarily to help maintain physical, mental or emotional health. (Health Outreach Partners, 2017)

Organizational self-care: A broad, organizational approach to foster a healthy and supportive work culture

Organizational self-care: A broad, organizational approach to foster a healthy and supportive work culture and environment for all employees. • Reduces burnout • Improves job satisfaction • Decreases staff turnover • Improves employee productivity • Promotes work-life balance (Health Outreach Partners, 2017)

How would you define self-care? § Anything that you do to maintain your sanity

How would you define self-care? § Anything that you do to maintain your sanity and ensure that you are well cared for. § Ideally self-care is not waiting until you need a break but being proactive with your schedule to allow flexibility to step away before things start to feel overwhelming.

Did you benefit from practicing self-care techniques? If so, how? • Yes. It made

Did you benefit from practicing self-care techniques? If so, how? • Yes. It made me slow down, take a moment, and /or remove myself from my desk vs staring at my computer all day. • Yes, it helped make the day go smoothly and not feel overwhelmed. • Yes, I took time to actually think about self-care and do it for 3 -5 minutes. More time would be ideal but at least it is a start!

Do you think that self-care should be a daily part of your routine? "Absolutely, but we need to make time for it and feel like it's OK to take time for it. Most of us barely even make time to eat lunch". . . Discuss potential barriers to workplace self-care and ways to overcome them.

 How did you benefit from workplace self-care? • It forced me to slow

How did you benefit from workplace self-care? • It forced me to slow down and stop rushing. That change alone helped calm me down and get some perspective. Objectives: • Lunch away from my desk and using • It forces me to refocus my daily activities to include a "nurture break". • I felt a little less overwhelmed in my personal life. the stairs • Meditation with music • Chatting with coworkers • Momentary mental breaks
