PLC Student Learning: Part 4 Commit to Adapt and Improve Instruction, Interventions, and Extensions For Granite School District Educators
COMMIT to specific intervention and extension strategies each teacher will employ (with whom and when) such that each of our students are better able to “stay on track” with the pacing of their grade and content level requirements. COMMIT to improving the learning environment and the classroom experience. Utilize the Strategies you committed to Adapt your instructional approach NOW to better support student learning
Summary: Commiting to Improvement After teachers have identified learning errors and mistakes, then addressed improvements to the classroom environment, it’s time to revisit and adapt our design of instruction, student engagement, interventions and extensions with the new knowledge of our students’ abilities, work, and error. Teachers share with their PLC members the specific interventions and extension strategies they will employ in their Tier 1 instruction. Each teacher commits to specific action items that improve the quality and the effectiveness of their new instruction adapted for and tailored to their students. The facilitator will ensure that this step occurs.
Adapt Designs Based on Student Learning Data We will revisit our initial instructional designs for Tier 1 Instruction Student Engagement and Interventions and Extensions Based on our student learning data, learning errors, and mistakes.
Administrator, Coach, and Specialist Support What assistance do we need from school leaders and coaches to be able to commit to and move forward with our adapted and improved instruction? How can we utilize the following people? Principal and Assistant Principal How and when do we contact these individuals? Instructional Coach Whenever questions arise, there are plenty of people to contact to get an answer. The most informed and immediate form of feedback will come from school administration and coaches. Yet, school personnel may not have the answer and may refer you to a district specialist or they may seek the answer in their network and report back to you with an answer. Either way, there is plenty of support for you in Granite School District. Literacy Coach Social Worker Curriculum Specialists Other District Support Staff
PLC Team Lead/Facilitator Support The role of the facilitator in the commitment process, is to ensure the team commitments are created by consensus of the team following the established roles and norms of the team. The note take or reporter will document the commitments and action items made by the team and the facilitator will follow up with and support team members in accomplishing their commitments. The module to delve deeper into PLC facilitator roles and training can be found here: Facilitating Your Team PLC.
Preparing for This Step in the Student Learning PLC Come to your PLC with an open-mind, being receptive to new ideas and strategies. It takes creativity, collaboration, and communication to consider new commitments, strategies, and improvements that ensure all of our students have access to learning and proficiency. We should also consider the supports we have when making these commitments and utilize those supports (coaches, administrators, coworkers) to the best of our ability. It is always good to come to a meeting thinking about how you can best use the resources at your disposal, given this setting offers the opportunity for that conversation.
