Playing College Sports NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA
IF YOU HOPE TO PLAY A SPORT AT AN NCAA DIVISION I OR II COLLEGE, YOU NEED TO LEARN ABOUT THE NCAA.
NCAA INFORMATION • Division I and II colleges can offer athletic scholarships. Division III colleges (mostly smaller, private colleges) cannot. • Before athletes can play a sport or receive a scholarship at a Division I or II college, they must meet NCAA’s academic requirements. • Division III athletes do not need to meet NCAA academic requirements.
NCAA REQUIREMENTS • Athletes who want to compete at a Division I or Division II college must have a minimum GPA in 16 core courses. • They must also have the required ACT or SAT score. ACT / SAT score requirements for Division I and II eligibility are based on a sliding scale. The higher the core GPA, the lower the test score required. Division III athletes do not need to meet NCAA academic requirements. • Students should check with their counselor to make sure they’re taking the courses they need.
NCAA REGISTRATION To be eligible for to play a sport at a Division I or II college, athletes must register with the NCAA Eligibility Center. This should be done during a student’s sophomore year. For information and to register, visit ncaa. org.
NAIA NJCAA • NAIA Division I and II colleges can award full or partial scholarships. To view eligibility requirements and a list of member colleges, visit playnaia. org. • NJCAA Division I and II junior and community colleges can offer athletic scholarships.
