This is a first hand- experience play. They are using real things to play with. They are using kitchen stuff to imitate what they see at home. Also, it can be featured as a pretend play. They are pretending to be chiefs cooking food. They are using their fine motor skills by using the spoons. It is an associative play. The two children are socially interacting with no organization. They became a little bit interested in each other. Also, they are deeply involved in their play. They would not respond if you talked to them while they are playing.
These two kids are playing near each other, but they are not socially interacting. They are playing separately with the same materials. This is called parallel play. Also, it is an creative play. They are painting, and drawing. They are expressing their feelings by creating a piece of art. They are also developing their fine motor skills in finger, and hands. They are using their hand which is called manipulative play.
These kids over here are playing together. They are socially interacting, and developing their social skills. They are having fun together. Also, it is an active play. They figured out that they are capable of lifting this brick all together. They are developing their gross motor skills by moving around, and carrying this heavy brick.
This little boy over here is using props. Obviously, his parents used some boxes and other stuff to make him a ship. He is enjoying the sword in his hand, and he’s enjoying using these props. It can be that he is rehearsing the future, and he will become a captain in future. This is developing his imagination. Also, he is developing his gross motor skills. He is moving his hands and legs, and also he must move his big muscles to go into his ship. He is choosing to play, and no one is forcing him to do so. This is an solitary play because he is playing alone independently.
It is an cooperative play. They are playing sports with each other. They are improving their friendship, and they are trusting each other. They are socially interacting with each other, and developing their physical skills. They also seem to try out their most recently learned skills. They learned to play football, and they are practicing it. They will feel proud that they all could play this game, and they will develop their friendship and their emotional skills. They are using all of their skills. Physical, social, emotional, and cognitive skills. They are playing depending on heir level of development. This is called coordinating ideas, feeling and relationship for play.
This child is playing with water. She is feeling the water. This an sensory play, and she is developing her sensory skills. An adult can ask her what is she feeling, and what is she seeing. She will speak the words which is developing her cognitively, and developing her language skills. She may also have a personal agenda. She has a plan on how she makes things go, and no one is allowed to change anything.
It can be that these boys over there making up rules for some game. They are planning on how to play it. Making up simple rules between themselves. Also, that little girl is only looking at them. She is not participating with them. Nevertheless, she is interested in the game. This is an onlooker play.
How adults can help kids play v Provide safety for their children. v Encourage play with other children. v Provide plenty of outdoors activity. v Allow children to organize their own game.
