Pangea? Famous Scientist: Alfred Wegener- German Meteorologist He proposed that the Continents were once a single land mass that drifted apart over time. He called this single land mass supercontinent Pangea, Greek for “all Earth” Wegner proposed this in 1912, but it wasn’t considered to be sufficient evidence in itself. He analyzed either side of the Atlantic Ocean for rock type, geological structures, and fossils.

Evidence of Pangea 1. Puzzle-like fit of the continents.

Sea Floor Spreading

Sea Floor Spreading

Sea Floor Spreading • Mid Ocean Ridges – underwater mountain chains that run through

Sea Floor Spreading • Mid Ocean Ridges – underwater mountain chains that run through the Earth’s Basins • Magma rises to the surface and solidifies and new crust forms • Older Crust is pushed farther away from the ridge
