3 Main Plant Structures Roots – Anchor the plant, retrieve water &minerals Stems – Brings water & nutrients to the leaves - Carries food back to the roots, also supports plant structure Leaves – Capture the sun’s energy to make sugar from CO 2 and water using photosynthesis - Also allow water to evaporate through transpiration
Vascular vs. Nonvascular Plants Vascular Plants – Have internal vascular tissue - Like veins & arteries of a plant - VT made of Xylem & Phloem – Xylem carries water and minerals up to leaves - Phloem carries sugar from the leaves down to roots - Vascular tissues help plants grow tall Nonvascular Plants – Green algae, mosses, liverworts and hornworts - Lack vascular tissue - Referred to as lower plants - Do not have true leaves, stems or roots
Flowers are the reproductive part of plants Plants that reproduce through flowers = Angiosperms Flowers attract insects with colour, smell & nectar to be pollinated Flowers have a stamen (male structure ) and pistil (female structure) Stamen produces pollen, houses sperm cells Pistil produces the ovule/egg cells, housed in ovary

Wikipedia Race The goal is to start at a specific Wikipedia page and only use the “blue links” to get to another Wikipedia page Starting Wiki Page: UOIT Ending Wiki Page: 1. Erosion 2. Medicine 3. Lumber The first person to reach the end word wins! http: //padlet. com/master 2486/Brag. Wall
Padlet & Wiki Game http: //padlet. com/master 2486/Brag. Wall If time permits… Research the 3 Ending Wiki Pages and how they relate to plants Write one point and post to Padlet Can be used to introduce students to online research Use Ending Wikipedia page to connect to curriculum expectations Use as an exit ticket
