Alabama Course of Study: 2 nd Grade Objectives • Identify the relationship of structure to function in plants, including roots, stems, leaves, and flowers. • Identify characteristics of animals, including behavior, size, and body covering.
Plants • There are many different parts of a plant. Each part has its own function. These parts include roots, stems, leaves, and flower.
Roots • The root of the plant absorbs water for the plant, as well as keeping the plant anchored to the ground.
Stem • Stems connect the roots to the leaves, helping to transport water, minerals, and sugars to different parts of the plant. They are also purposeful for providing support for the plant.
Leaves • Leaves are the chief food-producing function. They provide food for the plant as well as a place to store it.
Flower • The primary purpose of a flower is reproduction. Since the flowers are the reproductive organs of the plant, they mediate the joining of the sperm, contained within pollen, to the ovules — contained in the ovary. Pollination is the movement of pollen from the anthers to the stigma.
Animal s There are many different types of animals. Each animal is individually characterized by behavior, size, and body covering.
Animal behaviors Offensive/Defensive Behavior Used when the animal feels threatened. Parental Care Behavior Used when taking care of their young.
Animal Behaviors (Continued) Social Behavior Used when making friends and playing. Foraging Behavior Used when looking for food.
