INTRO • Made up of 3 distinct people • England claimed to own Ireland • But the only part they controlled was the Pale • Small area of Dublin and its surroundings

The Pale • • • People who were loyal to king Spoke English Were protestants Followed Eng law Wore English fashions
Common law • • • The people in Pale followed this English system of law Courts held in courthouse Harsh sentences Punishments such as jail or hanging
Outside the pale • Country ruled by Lords • Split into diff areas • Two types of people anglo-Norman lords • Gaelic Lords
Gaelic Lords • • ‘True’ irish ancestors. Surnames like Mac and O Eg O’Neills in Ulster O’Connors in midlands
Anglo-normans • Descendants of the Normans • . . who came to ireland during middle ages. • Surnames like ‘Fitzgerald’ • Eg Fitzgeralds of Desmond • Butlers of Ormond
Anglo-normans (2) • • Had been English But were now v irish Followed irish customs Inter-married with Gaelic Irish
Brehon Laws • • • Gaelic irish spoke irish Followed ancient Brehon laws Court on hillside No jails, only a fine as punishment Person’s wealth measured by the cattle he owned
Gaelic Dress • • • Wore a knee-length tunic Irish mantle over it Had a long moustache Had a fringe called a ‘glib’ Men and women were barefoot V diff to eng styles
Attacking the Pale • Gaelic irish and Anglo-Norman often attacked the pale • Raided farms for cattle • Got ‘black rent’ (protection money’) from farmers
People in Pale hated the natives • Sick of attacks and battles • Wanted the king to control the native irish • This would lead to the idea of Plantations
