CELLS TISSUES ORGANS Organ systems
System : group of organs that work together to perform a certain task Mammals circulatory, nervous, digestive system (and many more) Plants Root system and shoot system (only 2 organ systems) Image: Livescience. com
Shoot System: -Supports plant -photosynthesis occurs -transports nutrients & sugars -reproduction Root System: -Underground -Anchors plant in the soil -Absorbs H 2 O and minerals -constantly grows
Xylem : (inner layer) Water and minerals (in roots) rest of the plant such as the leaves -transports H 2 O/minerals up the plant Phloem: (outer layer) Sugars made by photosynthesis (leaves) rest of the plant such as stem and roots -transports food down the plant
• Root hairs increase surface area of the root • Water enters root by osmosis Osmosis: fluid moves from low concentration area high concentration area across semipermeable membrane. Equalizes the pressure • Pericycle- a cell located outside the phloem -prevents backflow of water • Water moves from root hairs into the xylem • More water in the xylem = more pressure - Root pressure
• All living organisms NEED H 2 O. • Plants need to dissolve their nutrients in water so it can be transported. Gravity pushes everything down. How does water move up a plant without a pump?
Root pressure is not enough to make water go up Plants need pull from above This is called Transpiration -release water from leaves (stoma) Water Cohesion- water sticks together Adhesion- water sticks to other “stuff” (xylem)

The Movement of Maple Sap (Page 75) In the spring, sucrose from the roots flows “upward” to help produce leaf buds. In the summer and fall, the leaves produce glucose that moves “downward” to be stored in the roots. Glucose Sucrose Starch Copyright © 2010 Mc. Graw-Hill Ryerson Ltd.
EXIT SLIP Do not copy the questions, Put your name on it, Answer questions according to paper colo 1. What is the segment of DNA called? 2. What is a cluster of similar cells called? 1. What is the pull from above called? 2. What are the 2 organ systems in plants? 1. How does water move into roots? 2. What are the name of the cells that allow water build up in roots?
