Plant Nutrients WALT – Explain what else a plant needs to grow WILF – Write the effects on the plants of deficiencies in N, P and K Text book questions 15 - 17, pg 17 Scienctifica handout, qs 1 -5, pg 57
Non Mineral Nutrients • The Non-Mineral Nutrients are hydrogen (H), oxygen (O), & carbon (C). But a farmer cannot control the amount of these nutrients the plants in his field gets
Mineral Nutrients – 2 types • Macronutrients – A lot of these are needed • Micronutrients – A little of these are needed
Macronutrients – Needed in large amounts • nitrogen (N), • phosphorus (P), • potassium (K). These major nutrients usually are lacking from the soil first because plants use large amounts for their growth and survival. • The secondary nutrients are calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and sulfur (S)
Micronutrients – needed in small amounts • • • boron (B), copper (Cu), iron(Fe), chloride (Cl), manganese (Mn), zinc(Zn). • Recycling organic matter such as grass clippings and tree leaves is an excellent way of Replacing nutrients It is not important that you remember these – just interesting !
How are these nutrients transported from root to shoot? Nutrients are transported from root to shoot through. . .
How are these nutrients transported from root to shoot? Nutrients are transported from root to shoot through the XYLEM
How are the products of Photosynthesis transported from Shoot to the rest of the plant? • The products of Photosynthesis are transported from Shoot to the rest of the plant through. . .
How are the products of Photosynthesis transported from Shoot to the rest of the plant? • The products of Photosynthesis are transported from Shoot to the rest of the plant through the phloem
Deficiency Symptoms of the Macroelements Write the effects on the plants of deficiencies in N, P and K
Nitrogen Deficiency • General chlorosis (yellowing) of the leaves. • Older leaves showing symptoms first. N deficiency in potato
Phosphorous Deficiency • Reduced plant size • Darkened foliage with a purplish cast. P deficiency in corn
Potassium Deficiency • Margins eventually turning brown. • Symptoms develop on lower leaves first. K deficiency on red currant
What are the minerals that are absorbed through the roots used to produce?
• Add to your drawing the uptake of minerals through the roots
