Plant cell Learning objectives: • Recall the levels of organisation within organisms • Recognise the structure of a plant cell • Describe the functions of some plant cell organelles • Compare the structures of plant and animal cells My favourite plant
Levels of organisation Task: Construct a levels of organisation flow chart using a plant example
Plant cell Task: Draw & label a diagram of a plant cell Task: Underline the structures that are exclusive to a plant cell (i. e. animal cells do not have them) Task: Describe the function of the parts you underlined. My favourite plant
Plant cell Cell wall: made of a tough carbohydrate called cellulose. It strengthens the cell, providing support. Chloroplasts: site of photosynthesis. They contain green pigment chlorophyll which absorbs light energy. Permanent vacuole: filled with cell sap - a store of dissolved sugars, mineral ions and other solutes. (NOTE: animal cells have temporary ones)
Plant cell Electron microscope shows more detail
Plant cell Ribosomes: carry out protein synthesis. (One very important group of proteins are enzymes – they control chemical reactions in the cytoplasm) Mitochondria: site of respiration – releases energy. Starch: storage carbohydrate Task: Add these organelles to your animal cell diagram
Animal and Plant cell Glycogen: storage carbohydrate Starch: storage carbohydrate Task: Create a table to compare and contrast the structure of plant and animal cells (9 marks)
Animal and Plant cell Animal 1 mark for each row Plant Contains nucleus Contains cytoplasm Has a cell membrane Contains mitochondria Contains ribosomes Has temporary vacuoles No cell wall No chloroplasts Contains a storage carbohydrate called glycogen Has a permanent vacuole Has a cell wall Has chloroplasts Contains a storage carbohydrate called starch
Plant cell: practical Task: Use the worksheet to prepare and view a slide of onion cells Actual length = Image length Magnification I A M
