Planning your Future Vocabulary Ms. Lane
ACT (American College Test) • This examination is taken by students in 11 th grade. • It is a college entrance exam. The higher the score a student earns, the better chance a student has of selecting the school and program he/she would like to pursue after high school. • The goal is to score a 22 or higher on this examination. • The main topics on the ACT are: English, Math, Reading and Science
Advance Placement (AP) • A college-level course that is offered to high school students. Students who score high enough on a qualifying exam can earn college credit.
Dormitory • A college or university building containing living quarters of students.
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) • This application is required for students to be considered for financial aid for post-secondary school.
Financial aid • Assistance given in the form of money to students who are unable to pay for school.
Grade Point Average • Earning the best possible grades will help you as you decide about training after high school, scholarships, college after high school and job opportunities
Honors classes • Classes that are more difficult than regular courses for which students earn more points for their GPA.
Major • A program of study chosen by a student that represents his or her main interest for a degree
Personal Statement • A brief and focused essay about one’s education and experiences. This statement is usually required for applications for universities and scholarships.
Room and Board • The money you spent at college on dormitory and eating expenses.
Scholarship • An amount of money paid for the benefit of a student at an educational institution • Could be based on: • • Culture GPA Sports Other factors
Tuition • The cost of classes at a college, university or training school
Undergraduate • A student in a college or university who has not yet earned a bachelor’s degree
