Planning for Ambitious Instruction Using the Math Framework
Planning for Ambitious Instruction Using the Math Framework Robin Conti Senior Secondary Mathematics Specialist Emily Bruning Elementary Mathematics Specialist @Educate. IN #INspir. EDmath
In Today’s Session Our purpose is to: Explore the Indiana Department of Education’s math framework. @Mrs. Bruning @Robin. LConti Our purpose is to: Need Discuss ways the math framework supports math educators.
A Vision for Ambitious Instruction ● Mathematics learning is an ACTIVE process. ● Students construct mathematical knowledge through exploration, discussion, and reflection. ● Teachers are facilitators of student learning, as they engage students in rich tasks. (NCTM, Principles to Actions, 2014) @Mrs. Bruning @Robin. LConti
Eight Effective Math Teaching Practices 1. Establish mathematics goals to focus learning. 2. Implement tasks that promote reasoning and problem solving. 3. Use and connect mathematical representations. 4. Facilitate meaningful mathematical discourse. 5. Pose purposeful questions. 6. Build procedural fluency from conceptual understanding. 7. Support productive struggle in learning mathematics. 8. Elicit and use evidence of student thinking. @Mrs. Bruning @Robin. LConti
Guiding Principles Mathematical proficiency is defined by conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, strategic competence, and adaptive reasoning. Mathematical proficiency drives independent thinking, reasoning, and problem solving. Mathematical proficiency is the foundation for careers in science, technology, engineering, and STEM. Effective math teaching engages students in meaningful learning through individual and collaborative experiences. Standardsbased instruction accelerates student gains. Teachers are facilitators of student learning, as they engage students in rich tasks.

How Can the Framework Support Your Work? How can school or instructional leaders utilize the frameworks to evaluate curriculum maps to ensure alignment to grade level standards? @Mrs. Bruning @Robin. LConti
Explore and develop rich tasks that support the eight mathematics teaching practices Interactive and engaging full day session with guided implementation and collaboration opportunities embedded throughout the day Open up traditionally closed problems to promote student discourse, provide opportunities for productive struggle, and to support students in risk-taking and sense-making Classroom teachers and coaches are the target audience, although the support of building level administrators is highly encouraged!
