PLANNING EXPEDITIONS UNIT 9 – OUTDOOR AND ADVENTUROUS ACTIVITIES
HOW TO PLAN EXPEDITIONS…. . WHEN PLANNING AN EXPEDITION IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT YOU TRY AND MAKE IT AS SAFE AS POSSIBLE AS WELL AS SUCCESSFUL. YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU THINK ABOUT NUMEROUS THINGS TO ACHIEVE THE ABOVE SUCH AS: 1. ROUTES 2. WEATHER 3. EQUIPMENT 4. INDIVIDUAL ABILITIES, STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES 5. SHELTER 6. FIRST AID 7. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
ROUTE PLANNING NEEDS TO BE CONSIDERED CAREFULLY IN RELATION TO GROUP SIZE AND ABILITY
ANOTHER FACTOR TO CONSIDER IS SHELTER/ FOOD AND WATER
HOW TO PLAN EXPEDITIONS…. . GROUP TASK “IN YOUR GROUPS DESIGN A MIND MAP THAT DESCRIBES ALL OF THE FACTORS THAT YOU WOULD NEED TO THINK ABOUT WHEN PLANNING AN EXPEDITION”P
APPROPRIATE CHOICE OF ACTIVITY When planning an expedition one of the most important factors to consider is to tailor the expedition to the abilities of your group. For instance you would not plan an expedition to the Artic for a group of people who have never experienced that type of environment. Issues to consider would be fitness, previous experience, map reading etc. Route planning is very important. If this factor is neglected then the expedition can sometimes be hard to complete.
APPROPRIATE CHOICE OF LOCATION When choosing a destination many factors need to be considered, such as; 1. How much money is available? 2. How large is your group? 3. How fit is your group? 4. How experienced is your group? 5. How well equipped is your group? For example, if choosing to climb Mt Kilimanjaro then costs need to be taken into account as an expedition such as this will cost a lot of money.
PARTICIPATING IN AN EXPEDITION TO MT KILIMANJARO SUCH AS “THE RED NOSE CLIMB” WILL COST A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF MONEY.
MINI TASK IN YOUR SMALL GROUPS THINK OF WHAT PRE–EXPEDITION ACTIVITIES AND PREPARATION A GROUP OF PEOPLE WOULD HAVE TO DO BEFORE EMBARKING ON AN EXPEDITION TO; 1. Mt KILIMANJARO 2. ARTIC 3. AMAZON

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES An aim is the reason why you are going on an expedition and an objective is what you hope to achieve by completing it. For example; 1. Aim – to practice map work and navigation skills 2. Objective – by the end of the expedition I will be able to set a map and take a compass bearing.
PERMISSIONS Going on an expedition may need certain permissions from various sectors, especially if the participants are under 18 years of age. These permissions will need to be collected before the trip starts. They are an important part of the planning process and may include agreement from; 1. Parents / guardians 2. Participants 3. Line managers 4. Organisations 5. Governing bodies 6. Local authority 7. Landowners
PERMISSIONS The consent form should give enough detail about the expedition and what may be happening. This is so the person who is signing the form understands what they are signing. Sometimes the consent form will include permission for medical treatment to be administered if the need arises.
SOMETIMES PERMISSION TO PERFORM FIRST AID WILL HAVE TO BE SOUGHT BEFORE THE EXPEDITION BEGINS.
