Planes and axes of Movement Jelly baby time
Planes and axes of Movement Jelly baby time Cocktail sticks too
Movement All body movements occur in different planes and around different axes. • A plane is an imaginary flat surface running through the body. • Movement occurs along each plane (blue paper) • An axis is an imaginary line, about which the body rotates or spins. (cocktail sticks)
Three planes
Three planes • Sagittal plane - a vertical plane that divides the body into left and right sides. Flexion and extension types of movement Examples - kicking a football, chest pass in netball, walking, jumping, squatting. Jelly baby – cut into left and right parts – stick paper between them • HINTS – Sagittal (divide into 2 Sides down the Spine)
Three planes Frontal • Frontal plane - divides the body into the front and back. Abduction and adduction movements Examples - cartwheel, star jumps, raising and lowering arms and legs sideway Jelly baby – slice into front and back – stick paper between them HINT – Frontal and front!!!
Three planes • Transverse plane - divides the body horizontally in an upper and lower half. • Rotation types of movement • Examples - hip rotation in a golf swing, twisting in a discus throw, pivoting in netball, spinning in skating. Jelly baby – cut into top and bottom – stick paper between them HINT – Trans and twist and/or Top and Bottom
Three axes (cocktail sticks) Sagittal axis
Three Axes of Movement • Transverse axis - this line runs from left to right through the centre of the body. Example - a somersault / forward roll - rotates around this axis. Jelly baby – pierce through hips of jelly (right to left) HINT – somersault on a spit – like a pig roast turns over a fire Transverse axis
Three Axes of Movement • Sagittal axis - this line runs from front to back through the centre of the body. Example - rotating in a cartwheel Jelly baby – pierce through belly button of jelly (front to back) HINT – Sagittal spinning side to side
Longitudinal axis Three Axes of Movement • Longitudinal axis - this line runs from top to bottom through the centre of the body. Example - when a skater performs a spin in 360 degree turn and Discus thrower spinning in circle Jelly baby – pierce from head to toe (top to bottom) HINT – longitudinal – lines on a map go from north to south
Jelly babies • Take a photograph after you have placed them on the worksheet and print it off into your folder of work • Video and quiz time
