The Dilemma: Religion versus social based structure and beliefs.
Ethical Dilemma; Parent standpoint My five and seven year old daughters are often teased or outcast from students because they do not believe in God the way the other students do, as Norse Pagans. I feel, as the mother, that it is unfair to exclude my children from events because they are faith based. The school should not hold faith based events without holding unbiased ones. 20 XX
Examples of Forced Faith “Children were offered Bibles during school hours by agriculture teacher Mr. Edmund. It was reportedly part of a community religious observance called Revival Week. ”(Shulz, 2016) In this case, the parent was called into the school for discipline when the children refused the bibles and proclaimed they are Pagans. “After lunch we went back to our room and our substitute teacher said I needed to put my necklace in my shirt. ” Grace says she complied, but asked the teacher why she needed to do this. She says he told her, “because things like that should be kept to yourself. ” Other children in the class had necklaces on, some of them with religious symbols, yet no request was made of them that they hide their necklace. ” (Pagan, 2012) Wearing signs of faith and culture should never be asked to be hidden or removed unless it crosses into every faith.
Ethical Dilemma: Teacher The solution The teachers are locals, raised in the “Bible Belt”. These programs are the “norm”.
Stakeholders would care deeply for all students and their concerns. However, this is also new to them. Presenting alternative programs with diverse concepts, could be a possibility.
Ethical Leadership Lenses - Profession - Maintain professionalism by not including personal beliefs and listening to parental concerns. Remain unbiased. - Care - Have genuine care for the students and the parent’s needs. Everyone is different and requires different things to feel comfortable.
Resolution Step 3 Step 1 Decide what the issue is and who it affects. Step 2 Hold a mediation Inform those it affects
The technology: Data!!
In the Classroom Taking care with students will come into play. Teachers must watch for persecution and bullying of the students that are not of a monotheistic faith. Teacher Student. Venue Home
