Plan for today BUILDING MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION FUNCTIONS OF BUILDINGS AND STRUCTURES TYPES OF LOADS AND STRUCTURES FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS OF BUILDINGS ROLE OF MATERIALS
What are the functions of buildings?
The function of a building is to provide a desired (may be controlled or uncontrolled) spatial environment within it continuously, for a given human activity. (example for controlled, a building with air conditioning system, humid control etc. )
The building therefore provides a safe and comfortable internal environment against the existing external and unwanted internal conditions for the given human activity.
And the building must accomplish the same economically (construction- must be done economically and within a reasonable time).
Since we said it must be safe lets define a word “safety”
Safety defined Safe against forces of nature, e. g. gravity, wind, rain and snowfall and earthquake etc besides forces imparted due to human actions (Anything on Earth has a tendency to go down, the building shouldn’t collapse. )
Loads There are two types of loads: vertical and horizontal The goal is to withstand these loads SAFELY (during service period 50 -70 years)
Interaction of a building with environment Humidi ty Solar radiatio n Air motion Air temperat ure Noise Buildi ng Lightenin g Sunlight Rain or snowfall Pollution
Well some of these factors are desirable (sunlight, when it’s cold we need some of them inside, natural air ventilation). But in some cases we need to cut off some of these things
