PLAGIARISM: PREVENTION AND DETECTION
PLAGIARISM: PREVENTION AND DETECTION Plagiarism is high on the agenda of problems that professors experience with student work.
PLAGIARISM: PREVENTION AND DETECTION Why do some students plagiarize?
PLAGIARISM: PREVENTION AND DETECTION Why do some students plagiarize? They don’t understand the ground rules
PLAGIARISM: PREVENTION AND DETECTION Why do some students plagiarize? They don’t understand the ground rules They are careless
PLAGIARISM: PREVENTION AND DETECTION Why do some students plagiarize? They don’t understand the ground rules They are careless They are desperate
PLAGIARISM: PREVENTION AND DETECTION Why do some students plagiarize? They don’t understand the ground rules They are careless They are desperate They want an easy way out and think they won’t get caught.
PLAGIARISM: PREVENTION AND DETECTION They don’t understand the ground rules Ø Students live in a world of mash-up everything Ø Easy access to all kinds of information leads them to equate access with the right to appropriate Ø They don’t understand the citation process (when to cite, when not, why it even matters).
PLAGIARISM: PREVENTION AND DETECTION The cure: Education. You or some other vehicle/department in the university need to ensure that students know the basic rules of research writing. (As, for example, the upcoming COMM 110: Research and Writing in Communications)
PLAGIARISM: PREVENTION AND DETECTION They are careless: Ø They gather information without noting their sources. Ø They have a only vague understanding of citation or even the need to attribute, so citing it right gets forgotten in the heat of putting together a paper.
PLAGIARISM: PREVENTION AND DETECTION The cure: Ø Stress the importance of documenting all sources (Ref. Works can be a great help here) Ø Stress the importance of attribution of sources
PLAGIARISM: PREVENTION AND DETECTION They are desperate Ø They feel inadequate to write the project themselves ("It's better to be a fake somebody than a real nobody. " –The Talented Mr. Ripley) Ø There may be cultural pressures at play
PLAGIARISM: PREVENTION AND DETECTION A note about International Students Ø Can believe information to be communal property rather than individual property. Ø May come from a background that encouraged or at least allowed use of unattributed sources. Ø May believe, culturally, that impending failure is a more serious risk than possibly getting caught cheating.
PLAGIARISM: PREVENTION AND DETECTION It’s unclear whether international students plagiarize more or are simply more easily caught.
PLAGIARISM: PREVENTION AND DETECTION The cure for desperation? ØEncourage the use of scheduling software like Dr. Paper’s Paper Calendar (http: //papercalendar. net/pphome. php) – Free! ØHave student submit major papers in stages. ØOffer research paper drop-in clinics. ØEncourage peer support groups.
PLAGIARISM: PREVENTION AND DETECTION Some students plagiarize because they want an easy way out and think they won’t get caught. The Cure?
PLAGIARISM: PREVENTION AND DETECTION Some students plagiarize because they want an easy way out and think they won’t get caught. The Cure? ØShow them how likely it is that they will be caught ØStage the research assignment – proposal, initial bibliography, first draft, etc. ØPenalties
PLAGIARISM: PREVENTION AND DETECTION Beating Plagiarism with Four Points:
PLAGIARISM: PREVENTION AND DETECTION Beating Plagiarism with Four Points: 1. Accessibility doesn’t mean you can appropriate
PLAGIARISM: PREVENTION AND DETECTION “This is a key issue that many starting researchers do not grasp—easy access to information does not bring with it the permission to pretend it's your information. It doesn't give you permission to put your name on it. Access and appropriation are different rights entirely. ” William Badke. "Give Plagiarism the Weight it Deserves. " Online 31, no. 5 (September-October 2007): 59.
PLAGIARISM: PREVENTION AND DETECTION Beating Plagiarism with Four Points: 1. Accessibility doesn’t mean you can appropriate 2. Intellectual property is vital to our civilization.
PLAGIARISM: PREVENTION AND DETECTION “I think here that we need to emphasize the value of the product that comes from the human mind. At the most fundamental level, the motivation to produce and to create is bound up with the ability to have my product recognized as mine. Societies that maintain intellectual property rights are societies marked by creative development. ” William Badke. "Give Plagiarism the Weight it Deserves. " Online 31, no. 5 (September-October 2007): 58 -60.
PLAGIARISM: PREVENTION AND DETECTION Beating Plagiarism with Four Points: 1. Accessibility doesn’t mean you can appropriate 2. Intellectual property is vital to our civilization. 3. The connection between creator and product gives information its power.
PLAGIARISM: PREVENTION AND DETECTION “Plagiarists need to recognize that they are working on a false assumption when they think that they gain power by using other people's words as their own. The fact is that they cannot take the words or views of others and pass them off as their own without robbing those words or views of most of their authority. ” Ibid.
PLAGIARISM: PREVENTION AND DETECTION Beating Plagiarism with Four Points: 1. Accessibility doesn’t mean you can appropriate 2. Intellectual property is vital to our civilization. 3. The connection between creator and product gives information its power. 4. Research writing is a discussion among sources
PLAGIARISM: PREVENTION AND DETECTION “Linking the names of authors to their words and ideas both maintains the power of what they have written and allows me, the researcher, to interact with them as peers. ” Ibid. , 60
PLAGIARISM: PREVENTION AND DETECTION Detecting Plagiarism
PLAGIARISM: PREVENTION AND DETECTION Detecting Plagiarism We have access to Turnitin: http: //www. turnitin. com TWU instructions: Intranet Academics Faculty documents Academic dishonesty Turnitin instructions
PLAGIARISM: PREVENTION AND DETECTION Detecting Plagiarism Advantages of Turnitin ØLarge database for comparison purposes ØCan be used as a teaching tool (students presubmit to Turnitin, then use the results to weed out their own plagiarism)
PLAGIARISM: PREVENTION AND DETECTION Detecting Plagiarism Disadvantages of Turnitin ØDatabase not comprehensive, especially for print only materials, but also for some electronic scholarly literature. ØAccusations of presumption of guilt, copyright violation, and student work being used to enhance company profits.
PLAGIARISM: PREVENTION AND DETECTION Detecting Plagiarism Alternatives to Turnitin: 1. Google
