Guide to 2016 Experiences • Likely to change • Opening of new ADH, placed in SWDS with ADH rotations • Opening of new rural clinic in Berri
“Home Base” Clinics
ADH
ADH • • Variable tutors: personally I haven't had any problems but I know people who have Have to deal with ADH protocols and support staff Easier to get units relatively in comparison to some SWDS Good to have the lab around but you're not going to have much luck with decreasing turnaround time regardless of ADH or SWDS • • • All but 2 groups have at least 1 day/week at ADH Some people also had ADH placements (8 weeks, variable tutors) Group 1 – Mon PCU, 1. 2, Tues 3. 1, Fri (PM) 3. 1 Group 2 – Mon 3. 1, Tues 3. 1, Fri (AM) PCU Group 3 – Tues 1. 2, Thurs 3. 1, Fri (AM) PCU Group 4 – Tues 2. 5, Wed (PM) 3. 1, Thurs PCU, 1. 2 Group 5 – Mon 1. 2, Tues GP, Thurs (AM) PCU Group 6 – Mon (AM) PCU, Wed GP, Thurs GP ADH placement – Mon 3. 1, Tues (AM) PCU, Fri 3. 1
ADH • PCU clinics similar to OD in BDS 4 • 013 s • Specialist Endo? – must find replacement from your own group if possible
Gilles Plains
Gilles Plains • • Actually inside the TAFE SA Gilles Plains Campus – 33 Blacks Rd, Gilles Plains SA 5086 Getting there – 273/ 501/ 502 Buses from CBD – 25 -30 min via O-Bahn – Driving – 20 minutes from CBD, parking onsite.
Dental Clinic • 6 student chairs and 4 tutor chairs - Very roomy • Shared clinic with TAFE Hygiene chairs but SEPARATE equipment and staff. • Reception – lovely, do all the booking and pt admin. • Materials available – excellent, well equipped. • Lab work must be couriered to ADH – In house lab only for denture reline/repair/rebase
Tutors and Units • Head Assistants – Eve (ADH 3. 1), Sam (Pros) • Tutors – Dr David Chu, Dr Swee Lee, Dr Audrey Lim – Tutors very skilled in Rem Pros • Units and experience Fixed pros – Can be found but challenging - FAIR • • Rem pros – EXCELLENT Endo units – GOOD Complicated medical histories All fixed and rem pros must be completed in morning Only 2 students generally allowed to complete FP/RP at a time All Rem Pros cases blocked off for 3 hours May get rotary endo experience, depends on tutor
Other • Cafeteria with TAFE SA • NEW clinic, equipment and facilities
Marion
Marion • Marion GP Plus clinic – 10 Milham St, Oaklands Park SA 5046 • Getting there – 25 to 30 minutes by car from CBD – Catch train from Adelaide Railway Station, get off at Oaklands station (usually around 20 -30 minutes, depends on if taking express)
Dental Clinic • • • 12 student chairs, shared with BOH 3 Separate DAs (all very nice), usually 1 per 3 students Reception – lovely, do all the booking and pt admin. Materials available – standard, well equipped. Digital x-rays Lab work must be couriered to ADH – In house lab only for copy dentures, denture reline/repair/rebase. Can also do final stages of Co-Cr (i. e. after frame has been constructed)
Tutors and Units • Head Assistants – Kate, Naomi/Belinda (Pros) • Tutors – Dr Susan Mackay, Dr Payam Sobhi, Dr Amelia Wiese (replacement) – A couple of other house dentists acted as fill-in tutors, all nice • Units and experience Fixed pros – Can be found but relatively easily - GOOD Rem pros – GOOD, ask Naomi Endo units – GOOD Complicated medical histories
Other • SA Aquatic Centre cafeteria opposite – Decent for swimming pool food, discount available • Westfield Marion 5 minute walk, food court – Maccas, KFC, ABs, Salsas, Oportos, salads… • Relatively new clinic, equipment and facilities
Noarlunga
Noarlunga • Around 30 km from the city off Beach road exit on Southern expressway (drive is around 30 -40 mins from the city) • Located in the health precinct of Noarlunga which includes Noarlunga hospital and aboriginal health services • Parking is located across the street from the clinic, next to Hungry Jacks (some spots are 4 hours only so avoid those spots) • Accessible by train (45 -50 mins) • Clinic is next to shopping centre and a Hungry Jacks and easy to drive to cafes near the beach for lunch and return back on time
Dental Clinic • 6 chairs are designated for students and student cards required to enter the clinic (smaller version of Elizabeth student clinic) • Tutors are Dr Satya Vegunta and Dr Susan Mackay, backup tutor is Dr Suren who takes over if Dr Satya or Dr Susan is away • Digital x-rays are located in the clinic • In clinic Monday (all day) Tuesday (all day) and Friday AM (two weekends each week!!)
Noarlunga +ves • More independence compared to ADH clinic – Tutors are less likely to "hover" while doing treatment (will observe for extraction and endodontic treatment and will check crown prep every now and than) – Less likely to go overtime in Noarlunga – One tutor for whole day so no need to get assessments done by morning or to move clinics in afternoon – DA's have a form telling them what each student is doing and will prepare tray early – Can bring patients in earlier than if needed – Never finish patients later than 4: 05 and titanium and self assessments no later than 4: 30 (rarely happens and tutors will just leave) – Pt FTA and cancellation better than ADH – Reception will handle patient flow and give you 013 when patient FTA's
Noarlunga -ves • • • Have to be at clinic by 8: 30 (they notice when you are late) Recently started laminated form for ordering equipment and some DA's won't fill if not using them Uncomfortable timetable (Mon, tues and Fri) If you don't love dentures than Noarlunga is not for you (Last week I had 8 denture cases from 12 patients) All students have finished or have booked in their final crown units but it was difficult to get the units RCT is also very difficult to find Extractions mixed bag (I only have had 3 extractions in Noarlunga this year while other students have had a lot more) Pt management is very difficult, reception will book you up to four weeks in advance and is very difficult to move patients. (Reception will not move patients. You must call patients, arrange new times and tell the reception what new times are) Hard to access clinic for patient management on days off
Advice for people who want to apply • If low on units in multiple field (if out of fourth year with 3 units crowns, 15 endo etc) Noarlunga will be difficult to get those units • If you have units you can hold onto from ADH, keep for your ADH placement? • If want more "guidance" ADH placement would be better • If you do not want Noarlunga, do not place it in your preferences at all. Will automatically get it (OR can get all your mates to put Noarlunga down and you will likely all get it)
Rural Clinics
Port Lincoln
Port Lincoln • Approx 7 -7. 5 hours by car (stop at Whyalla) – Depends on how much you speed • 50 minutes by air (QANTAS and Rex only) – ($100 one way)
Location • Working in the dental unit (ground floor) of Port Lincoln Hospital
Dental Clinic • 4 chairs and Huge ‘cubicles’ – Much more roomy than ADH or SWDS. • Head receptionist Di – Lovely to deal with, accommodating. – Also Jo is the other receptionist • Other dental professionals – Estee, Dentist – good for advice – 2 x. OHTs – Dr Ben Graves OMS once a month • • Materials available – mostly sufficient Specialist materials must be brought from ADH e. g. ortho bands, metal pins, NO EDTA only RC Prep for endo
Structure of the week • Ideally 5 days, 9 -4 pm in the clinic • However supply of tutors is low – our group had 3 out of 4 Wednesdays ‘off ’ as no tutor available. • First week is MON-THURS normal clinic + FRI – Oral surgery observation with Dr Ben Graves in General Theatre. • Wednesday evenings 4 -6 pm observation at Private Practice with Dr Chung.
Tutors and Units • Tutors – Mainly Dr VU (responsible for assessment) – Dr Fung, Dr Hong Chang, Dr A Bills, Prof Logan, Dr Duncan Wells – Dr Jarred Elson (local dentist, Fridays only) • Units and experience Fixed pros units Rem pros (no in house lab, also only 4 weeks) Endo units (most people picked up endo) Rem pros (tx planning + outsource , lots of older patients) Complicated medical histories (elderly) Challenging cases attempted since hard to refer to ADL
Accomodation • Lovely house, large living space, 2 toilets and wash sinks, laundry and wifi. • 10 -15 min walk from hospital OR 4 minute drive.
Things to do • YTAP – local young professionals community, fun events, get involved! • Shark cage diving, famous Coffin Bay oysters, Sharkey’s Bar/Club (mad schnitzel, special every Monday night) • Local petting zoo type thing • Can hire car from Port Lincoln Airport • Better in summer! • Drinking
Mount Gambier
Dental Clinic, Tutors, Units • • • 4 -5 hours from Adelaide by car, 1 hour flight Dr Andre & Dr Dunn One DA between two Four chairs (2 BDS + 2 BOH 3) Lots of 013/ROP + Exos 311 011/012 s + cons Occasional endo All pros work is referred (rem pros & fixed pros) ‘longest waitlist’ in SA ‘caries like never seen before’
Accommodation
Location • Mount Gambier and Districts Health Service • 5 minutes drive from accommodation • 20 minutes walk from accommodation
Things to do • • Umpherston’s Sinkhole Blue Lake Mount Schank Port Mac. Donnell Coonawarra / Penola Grampians Great Ocean Road
Whyalla
Location • Transport options include flying, driving or catching the bus. – Driving time 4 hours 16 mins, realistically 5 hours • Accommodation is essentially less than a 5 min walk to the clinic, 2 min drive to shopping centre. • Large bedrooms. • Generally clean and you will probably end up with your own bathroom. • They say there is a cleaner but we are pretty sure that is a myth. • Lots of spiders- buy bug spray. • Occasionally tutors may stay the night in the accommodation. • Basketball court and volleyball court just outside. • Fishing, Maritime museum
Clinic • 5 patients a day • 3 days a week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday) on most weeks • 4 week rotation • Procedures carried out: Examinations, preventive treatment, scaling and cleaning, restorative treatment, endodontic treatment and simple extractions. Referral for all prosthodontic treatment and extractions in the presence of complicating factors
RFDS trip Only certain groups Friday, Saturday, Sunday Marla and Mintabie Two tutors, four students 2 hour RFDS flight from Port Augusta Friday: Flight to Marla airstrip and attended patients at a local primary school in Mintabie • Saturday: Attended patients at a local community clinic in Marla • Sunday: Return flight to Port Augusta • • •
Advantages • Fantastic Tutors with shorter wait time. • Good DA’s, they also don’t mind if you help yourself to LA and Burs before the patient arrives. • 5 patients a day for one hour each. • Great clinical experience with exams, large restorations, frequent exos and endo. • Patients are generally nice • Flying Doctors service • Make sure someone in your group has a car! It will make a huge difference for grocery shopping. • Places to visit include The lookout and the Bottle and Bird.
Disadvantages • Strict rules on consent and paperwork in general. • You must put every treatment code in and separate into ALL the appointments BEFORE you take the patient to the front desk. • Tutor must sign everything off before you take the patient to the desk. • Allow enough time during the appointment for the above. • If they can’t find a tutor they will cancel clinic for students. • Gets very cold so take warm clothes. • You will need to supply most of your own bedding. The blanket they give you is paper thin. Take a good doona or sleeping bag.
Interstate Placements
Tasmania
Locations
Dental Clinic, Tutors, Units • • • Great clinic, great people: you get your own room, personal DA, digital X-rays and one tutor for two people In the middle of nowhere: we managed without a car but everyone else has brought a car: not much to do Will be difficult to get endo units and fixed pros: you only do one rem pros case F/F with a prosthetist which is good but endo criteria are really strict and they try and book any fixed pros they have to students but don't count on any units Oral Surgery – Average approx. one extraction per day. Can assist with a few surgicals. If you are keen, can do a surgical or two. GA sessions – Usually get 1 -2 GA sessions through the rotation – Mostly pediatric patients – Get to do work under GA, fillings / extractions
Clinic structure • Total 4 days a week for 8 weeks. • Starting at 8: 30 am, finishing at 4: 30 pm. • Monday – SNU Burnie. Not really SNU patients. Very similar to PCU clinic in ADH? (2015, not 2016) • Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday – Community Dental Centre. Similar to our GDP patients but lower SES. Mostly Cons, Exos and cleans. • Student : Tutor ratio = 2: 1 • Student : Dental assistant ratio = 1: 1 • Work much more independently compared to the ADH
Accommodation • • 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom shared apartment Probably similar to a 3 star motel Fully functional kitchen, TV, air conditioning etc. Wifi was average No mobile reception except with Telstra or subsidiaries Very close to clinic (5 min walk) Close to shopping strip and Kmart/ Woolworths
Wyong
Gym Grocery Fast food Home
Gym Grocery Home Clinic
Home Clinic Train Station
Home Weekends
If you don’t have a car • Dental clinic – 10 -15 m away – Very troublesome to reach by public transport – Rely on the kind hearted staff of the clinic to fetch and send daily – Remember Karenne, she’s the reason why you’ll reach clinic and come home on time, be very nice to her, buy her a present at the end • Groceries – 5 to 10 m walk • Wyong train station - Google the bus timings, typically takes 30 -40 m • Sydney - takes on average 3 hours
If you have a car • You’re all set, drive safe mate.
Dental Clinic - general • About 12 chairs, 3 -4 working dentists , 3 -4 hygienists and therapists • 3 different tutors (Mon/Wed, Tue/Thurs, Fri) – Dr Lee - awesome – Dr Moe - awesome – Dr Hass - awesome • OPG facility • Surgical procedures • 1 male and 1 female bathroom for staff
Dental clinic - The good • Your own room • Your own personal DA (extremely helpful) • Chairside X-ray unit with phosphor plates • No need for clinic coat, you wear disposable gowns • You are (almost) respected as a graduated dentist • Professional working relationship with the staff • Able to experience the working environment in another state
Dental clinic - The not-so-good • Paper records (Yes if you think Titanium is tedious, wait till you come here) – Handwrite all clinical notes – Item codes and content – Charting • Exclusively extractions and restorations • Steep learning curve initially • Potentially very stressful • Long working hours and days - the burnout is real
Dental clinic - the differences • Slightly different dental materials – Gradia Direct (feels slightly ‘softer’) vs. Filtek Supreme(what we use in ADH) – Personally I feel that GICs and amalgams set faster • Different naming system for burs – Just don’t ask for avocado bur, trust me • Types of Tx – Lots of ROP – Restorations – Extractions – Denture repairs/additions – No endo/FP • Co-payment system – No Co-payment for dental patients in NSW • Tx approach – ADH - more variety of Txs e. g. , pulpotomy/extirpation refer for endo – Wyong - typically don’t do endo stuff, if pulpally involved = extraction/seek private endo

Housekeeping • Things provided at the cottage – Bed linen, cutlery, towels • Things you should bring – Clothes, entertainment (internet is extremely slow at times) • Things you should purchase upon arrival – Food and groceries, toiletries, washing detergent
After 8 weeks • • Extremely positive and enriching experience • ↑ overall confidence and competence • ↑ communication with pts of different demographics • ↑ speed and quality of restorations • ↑ proficiency in extractions • ↑ appreciation for city life • ↑ knowledge of Sydney 10/10 would recommend
