PART 2: INTRODUCTION * Patterns are a repeated arrangement of shapes, numbers, lines and colours. In order to identify the pattern, we need to identify the relationship between the variables of the pattern * Geometric patterns are repeated arrangements of shapes only, this is how this type of pattern differs from other patterns * Geometric patterns refer to the progression or depression of a shapes size in proportion to the constant rate of increase or decrease

PART 3: SUMMARIES AND ACTIVITES

PART 3: SUMMARIES AND ACTIVITES

Geometric patterns • • • With all geometric patterns, there is a constant rule

Geometric patterns • • • With all geometric patterns, there is a constant rule which is applied to the shape that determines its increase or decrease For example: Pattern 1: 4, 8, 12……. . - It is a pattern starting with 4, and it increases by 4 each time, so the pattern is + 4 - So if you were asked to complete the next two numbers in the pattern , what would it be ? - 16 and 20, so the complete pattern would be : 4, 8, 12, 16, 20

Geometric patterns The example below is a geometric pattern of triangles which are (variables),

Geometric patterns The example below is a geometric pattern of triangles which are (variables), that are made up of match sticks, which are (constants), The first triangle consists of 3 matchsticks, the second part of the pattern consists of two triangles which gives us a total of 6 matchsticks and the third part of the pattern consists of 3 triangle which provides us with 9 triangles. So when we focus our attention to the table below the triangles, we can clearly see rule is (+3) as we are adding three match sticks to each part of the pattern, so the next part of the pattern will have 4 triangles and it would consist of 12 match sticks

Geometric patterns work in two ways, with the previous example, we learned about the

Geometric patterns work in two ways, with the previous example, we learned about the shape that progressed which means that the pattern got bigger (+), now we will look at a pattern that decreases (-) The example below shows us the increasing and decreasing geometric pattern, if you focus your attention to the right side of the example which highlights the decreasing pattern, you would notice the rule is (-3)

Activity 1 - Describe the pattern in each number sequence, then fill in the missing numbers to complete the pattern. a) 1, 4, 7, 10, □, □, □ _________________ b) 16, 26, 36, □, □, □ _________________ c) 87, 81, 75, □, □, □ _________________ d) 2, 10, 50, □, □, □ _________________________________________________

Activity 2 - Answer the following questions 2. 1 Determine the rule for the following pattern 2. 2 Indicate how many blocks you would have for the 5 th shape in the pattern. 2. 3 Draw the next two shapes to complete the pattern

REMEMBER!!!! There is a pattern to everything around us, some patterns are different from others, but they are always present. Once we identify the pattern, we will be able to understand how everything works…that is intelligence
