Topic : Converting Decimal Fractions Task 7 Rule : When converting decimal fractions to common fractions bring the decimal fraction to a base 10, 100 or 1 000.
Remember : 0, 3 = 3/10 (1 place to the right of comma) 0, 03 = 3/100 (2 places to the right of comma) 0, 003 = 3/1 000 (3 places to the right of comma) We can simplify some common fractions. A fraction is in its simplest form when we cannot find a factor to divide into both the numerator and denominator.
Worked Example 1. Write the decimal as a common fraction : 1. a) 0, 6 = 6/10 = 3/5 2. Write each decimal fraction as a mixed number : Remember the number before the decimal comma (to the left) is the whole number.
Worked Example 2. a) 1, 07 = 1 + 0, 07 = 1 + 7/100 = 1 7/100 b) 4, 25 = 4 + 0, 25 = 4 + 25/100 = 4 + ¼ = 4 ¼ 3. We can also write mixed numbers as decimal fractions : a) 2 3/10 = 2, 3 b) 397/ 1000 = 0, 397
Worked Example It is easy to write 4/10 or 216/1000 as a decimal fraction. But how do we write ½ or 3/5 or 6/50 as a decimal fraction? We write each of them as an equivalent fraction with either 10, 100 or 1000 in the denominator. 4. a) 1/5 = 1/5 x 2 = 2/10 = 0, 2 b) 5/8 = 5/8 x 125 = 625/ 1 000 = 0, 625
Activity 1. 1. 1. 0, 1 2. Write each decimal as a common fraction : 1. 2. 0, 43 1. 3. 0, 169 1. 4. 0, 009 Write each decimal as a common fraction in its simplest form 2. 1. 0, 02 2. 2. 0, 625 2. 3. 0, 04 3. Write each decimal as a mixed number : 3. 1. 1, 2 3. 2. 2, 193 3. 3. 86, 059 4. Write each mixed number as a decimal fraction : 4. 1. 1 3/10 4. 2. 5 96/100 4. 3. 2 36/100
