INTRODUCTION In our previous lesson we discussed the importance of choosing the subjects that relate to your career field. We mentioned that making a selection of subjects starts as soon as completing grade 9, which means you do not have to wait to complete your matric to start deciding on your choice of career. We also said that your chosen subjects should be relevant. If you are interested in a health faculty, then you should focus on Life Sciences and the rest of the subjects that are relevant to that career path. If you are interested in a Business faculty, then you should focus in Business Studies and the rest of the relevant studies that will lead you to your desired career path. This week we will take a closer look at the levels of education and the duration of study that could help us to reach our career fields.

STUDY LEVELS AFTER LEAVING SCHOOL Once you complete Grade 9, there are further levels of study to proceed to in order to reach your chosen career. You should first begin with your Further Education and Training Phase (Grade 10 -12) that will lead you to your last class of the high school, known as “matric”, where you will do your National Senior Certificate (NSC). If you have excelled in your matric, you will stand a chance to meet the requirements to attend University which will enable you to enroll for a degree. Enrolling at a University would offer you a chance to study for the skills that are needed in your desired career field. It is not everybody who chooses to reach matric. After Grade 9, some learners choose to enroll at an FET college to do a National Vocational Certificate which is equivalent to the NSC (matric). This course takes 3 years to complete and focuses mostly on the practical skills required for a workplace or your desired career field, while the NSC is more academic and theoretical. The last option or level could be learnership. This is when learners opt to leave school after Grade 9 or Grade 12 to follow the Trade, Occupational and Professional path. By so doing, learners start to work and get the job training at the same time while they also get paid a small wage.
