PIP-II Interface Management Process • Interface management process is documented in the PIP-II Interface Management Plan – ED 0007942 “The Interface Management Plan provides a process to develop, control, identify, manage, verify, review, approve, release and revise technical interfaces for the PIP-II project. ” – – L 3 to L 3 interfaces L 3 to Fermilab external interfaces (i. e. to other accelerators/infrastructure) Partner interfaces (Partner to Fermilab, Partner to Partner) Below L 3 at the discretion of the L 2 Design Authority Level 3 Interfaces and Partner Interfaces Highest control level (requires adherence to interface management plan) Sub-Level 3 Interfaces 4 12/2/2020 Lowest control level (at the discretion of the L 2 Design Authority) Alex Martinez | PIP-II Technical Workshop

Master Interface Control Document (ICD) • All interfaces are listed in the Master ICD (ED 0010433) – L 3 to L 3, Partners, external, etc. – One global document that captures all PIP-II interfaces • Excel based • Other programs considered (DOORS Next Generation, JIRA, etc. ) – Searchable by L 3, Partner, etc. • Master ICD provides general information on an interface – Lists a brief description of the interface – Lists the different parties involved and their scope for the given interface – References documents where the interface details can be found, i. e. Interface Specification Documents (ISDs) • Interface Specification Documents (ISD’s) contain all the information or references to the information that is necessary to fully define and complete the given interface • Master ICD provides general details, ISD provides specific details • ISDs are created typically by each L 3 to provide the specific details of their interfaces – Interfaces should trace back to the global Master ICD – ISDs can also reference drawings, technical documents, etc. – Each L 3 can have multiple ISDs as required to fully define all of their interfaces 15 12/2/2020 Alex Martinez | PIP-II Technical Workshop

ISD Guidance • In order to aid in ISD development, an ISD template has been created – Uses the standard PIP-II template and format – Reviewers and approvers assigned according to Document Management and Control Procedure (Doc. ISD Template – new rollout • Template allows flexibility on how to organize the information – Most existing ISD’s can be updated with minimal changes – Tables, figures and narrative descriptions can be used as needed to describe the interfaces • New ISD features/requirements – Traceability to the Master ICD has been added by listing the unique Master ICD ID# for each interface at the beginning of each section where the interface is described – Summary Table at the end has been added that tabulates all the interfaces and includes verification information • All L 3’s are required to have an ISD (MSWord document) using the template provided – Needed to add the traceability element – Where drawings and specifications are used to define an interface, the ISD can provide some context and then reference the drawing/specification for more details 17 12/2/2020 Alex Martinez | PIP-II Technical Workshop
