Pintor francês, renomado por seus panoramas de batalhas, retratos e temas orientalistas árabes, Émile Jean-Horace Vernet nasceu no "Palais de Louvre", filho de Claude Joseph Vernet, em 30 de junho de 1789. Iniciou sua formação artística no estúdio de seu pai sendo complementada por uma educação acadêmica formal. Vernet rapidamente desenvolveu um desprezo pela seriedade de espírito elevado da Arte acadêmica francesa influenciada pelo classicismo, e decidiu pintar tomando como referência a cultura contemporânea. Especializou-se na glorificação da era napolônica e esteve a serviço de Luís Filipe e de Napoleão III. Com a “Bourbon Restoration”, uma série de pinturas de batalha encomendada pelo duque de Orléans, o futuro rei Louis-Philippe, Vernet ganhou reconhecimento. Muitas de suas pinturas feitas durante esta fase inicial de sua carreira foram consideradas representações vivas do exército francês, no calor da batalha. Ao longo de sua carreira recebeu inúmeras premiações, tendo o Rei Louis-Philippe como um dos seus patronos. Self-Portrait, 1835 Após a queda da “July Monarchy”, durante a Revolução de 1848, Vernet descobriu um novo patrono em Napoleão III da França. Continuou a pintar representações do heróico exército francês durante o Segundo Império e manteve o seu compromisso de representar a guerra de uma forma acessível e realista.
Vernet retratou muitas batalhas das Guerras Napoleônicas e acompanhou o exército francês durante a Guerra da Criméia, produzindo vários quadros importantes. Morreu em Paris em 17 de janeiro de 1863.
