Pink Shirt Day Celebrating kindness respect and positive
Pink Shirt Day • Celebrating kindness, respect and positive relationships.
Pink Shirt Day • In 2007 two Nova Scotia youth, David Shepherd and Travis Price and their teenage friends organized a high-school protest to wear pink in support of a Grade 9 boy who was being bullied. • So David and Travis and some others went to a discount store and bought 50 pink shirts. They sent out messages to schoolmates that night, and the next morning they brought the shirts to school in a plastic bag. • As they stood in the foyer handing out the shirts, the bullied boy walked in. His face spoke volumes. It looked like a huge weight was lifted off his shoulders, Travis recalled.
Pink Shirt Day • Wednesday, February 26 th. • Emphasizes the need for bystanders to assist those who are being harmed and to assist those who are doing the harming. • Builds school spirit and better citizenship. • Reminds us that we all need to do our part to help those in need.
Bullying and Conflict Bullying Conflict • Intentionally hurtful. • Involves power. • Should always be reported. • Not intentionally hurtful. • Does not involve power. • Should be worked out by the people involved.
Types of Bullying • Physical • Verbal • Social/Emotional • Cyber
Crumpled Paper Activity • Bullying hurts and can impact someone for a long time. • Bullying affects people in different ways, but no matter what, it is important to realize that hurting someone in any way is not acceptable.
How Does Bullying Make a Person Feel?
Reasons • The bully is someone others look up to and want to hang out with. • They want to “side” with the bully because it makes them feel strong. • They’re entertained by the bullying. • They don’t think speaking up will help. • They’re afraid that if they say something, the bully will turn on them.
Ways to Prevent Bullying • Build happy (respectful, kind, understanding) relationships with other students. • Join an anti-bullying group at your school. • Hang out with your friends. • Avoid areas where there are no school staff present. • Try not to act scared. • Don’t bully people yourself. Instead try to be friendly to everyone. • Exhibit confidence and be assertive. • Think of a time where you had to overcome a challenge and remind yourself that you can be resilient (you can bounce back).
What If Bullying Does Occur? • Be aware of ways you can report bullying at your school and then report it to a trusted adult (parent, teacher, principal) immediately. • Tell the person doing the bullying to “stop”. • Use the power of the group. • Tell the person being targeted to go somewhere else with you. • Ensure that the target hears the message that he/she does not deserve to be bullied.
What if I am Bullying Someone? • Admit it to yourself first. • Tell an adult that you trust that you want to change your behaviour. • Don’t label yourself as “mean” or “bad”, but work to do better the next time. • Maybe someone else is hurting you so ask yourself why would you want to hurt someone else?
