Review Looking at the pig, each ear can be divided into four sections. Each section represents a number. You can have up to two notches per section. You may have one notch or no notches at all. Trust me, the system is designed this way and mathematically makes sense. You will see once we start practice. The only section that can have one notch is the tip (81).

Let’s Practice I have a pig with a litter number of 28 and an individual pig number of 6. It is written 28 -6. This is how I would represent that.

Practice On the back of your worksheet, fill in the information below. Pig A: Litter #12 Pig #2 Pig B: Litter #15 Pig #6 Pig C: Litter #26 Pig #8 Pig D: Litter #35 Pig #14 We will do the first one together.

Pig A You can use subtraction to help you figure out which notches to use. Our Litter# is 12. Which notch can we use without going over 12? 9 - So we draw a notch in 9. We are left with 3 and can put a notch in 3

Pig A Our individual pig number is 2. What is the highest number we can use without going over? 1 2 -1 = 1 We have another 1, so we can add another notch to the 1 section.
