Our pig: Hamm • Hamm is a newborn piglet • While Hamm is a guys name the gender of this pig is female
Umbilical cord and the Anus • The umbilical cords purpose is to carry oxygenated blood and nutrients from the placenta to the fetus • The anus has a purpose too, its function is to it excretes the waste from inside
Hard and soft palate, featuring the teeth • Hard palate- this helps the movement of the food from mouth to larynx • Soft palate- it is responsible for closing off the nasal passage for the act of swallowing • Teeth- the teeth are what breaks down the food
Taste buds • Taste buds are used on the tongue to taste things
Liver & Gall Bladder • The liver is an organ that secretes bile, breaks down amino acids, and filters out toxins from the food it digests. • Gall Bladder stores and holds the bile that the liver secretes.
Small & Large Intestine • Small Intestine is the organ that goes through chemical digestion. • Large Intestine pulls the water out of the waste.
Stomach & Rugae • Stomach is a muscular sack that chemical and mechanical digestion occurs in. • Rugae is a series of ridges in the stomach that help grind food up
Spleen • The spleen filters blood and helps the body fight off bactiria.
Heart, Lungs, and Diaphragm • Heart oxygenated the blood and sends it all through out the body. • Lungs supply oxygen to the heart so the heart can oxygenate the blood. • Diaphragm a glob of cartilage and muscle that controls our breathing rate, and help us breathe heart
Trachea & Esophagus • Trachea is a tube that leads to the lungs and allows air to go in and out by the control of the cartilage rings. • Esophagus is a 10 inch tube leading to the stomach that allows food into the stomach. It transports the food by contractions in the tube.
Kidneys & Pancreas • Kidneys filter waste out of the blood and contain thousands of filtering units called nephrons. • Pancreas secretes substances that control blood sugar levels.
Thyroid gland • The Thyroid gland regulates metabolism and secretes a hormone called thyroxins.
