Biography: Pierre-Phillipe Thomire was born in Paris, France, on December 6, 1751. He was a French bronze sculptor, the most prominent producer of ornamental objects and furniture of the First French Empire. In 1765, Theodore studied sculpture at the “Académie de Saint Luc” and had received his training at the workshop of Pierre Gouthière, the outstanding Parisian ciseleurdoreur who worked in the Louis XVI style before establishing his own shop in 1776. Thomire began to collaborate with Jean-Claude-Thomas Duplessis, the artistic director of the “Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory”. When Duplessis died in 1783, Thomire assumed the leading post, and became responsible for all decorations in gilt-bronze used in the production of manufacturing. In 1783 -1764 he received his first notable commission: to cast bronze and gold finish on the handles modeled by Boizot on a pair of porcelain vases of Sèvres, currently exposed alternatively between the “Musée du Louvre” and “Palazzo Pitti”. In 1806 he exhibited and won a gold medal in the “Exposition Publique des Produits de l’Industrie”, the first time that was allowed the presence of a bronzier along exhibitors.
