In the Meadow--1890 Between 1888 and 1892 Renoir painted a number of works in which the same pair of girls are posed together. These intimate genre scenes, which celebrate youthful innocence, found a ready market in the early 1890 s. The same models appear in "Two Girls at the Piano" of 1892.

The Maison Fournaise
In the Painting Renoir included his future wife, the twenty-one-year-old Aline Charigot (1859– 1915), as the woman cooing to her dog. Artist Gustave Caillebotte (1848– 1894) was both a wealthy patron of the impressionists and gifted painter. He met Renoir in 1876, and they became friends.
Artists will sometimes change their paintings Oil paintings have to be painted over—no erasing oil paints! “Halo” around hat—hat was moved when awning was added Sometimes changes are less obvious, so we use Xrays to see what’s underneath • Have discovered entire paintings under paintings • With newer Xray machines, we can tell colors of paint were used
X-ray of the Painting From the X-ray, we learned: --Awning was added later, to add depth to the painting and give the group a more intimate and cohesive feel --One major character was removed because Renoir was irritated with her. She was in front of Charigot. --Several people are looking in different directions from how they were originally painted
