Pictures in Stories
Pictures and Illustrations in stories help you to understand the story better. When you are asked to explain how a picture or illustration helps you to understand what happens in a story, there are things that you should and should not do.
Don’t describe the picture with words like: Beautiful Interesting Exciting Important
Do the following when writing about a picture: Identify which picture you are discussing. You can identify it with a number if it has one in the text, or by referring to it as the first, second, or third picture in the story, or by briefly describing what is in the picture.
Do describe what you see. Pay attention to small details, what animals and people are wearing, what they are doing, and the looks on their faces.
You will look at some pictures and write down what you see in the pictures. Then you will share what you wrote down with your teacher and classmates. But, first, we’ll do a sample picture together.
Here is the Sample Picture.
Sample Picture
The picture shows two men talking with a steam engine behind them.
They are both wearing hats that look like they work for the railroad.
The younger man is holding something and pointing to it as if explaining something.
The older man has his hand to his chin with a puzzled look on his face.
There is a small building with a chimney, a pile of railroad ties and a basket on a cart behind the two men.
Now, YOU write what you see in the following pictures. Share what you see. When you are finished, your teacher will advance the to the next picture after you finish your explanation of each one.
Picture A
Picture B
Picture C
Picture D
All of the pictures that you have seen are from stories. When a picture appears in a story, there is usually a quote associated with the story that also helps explain the picture. The quote from the story that contained the picture of the two men talking was, “There’s a hole her to let the oil drip out, ” and, “It drips oil when oil is needed. ” Take a look.
Sample Picture “There’s a hole here to let the oil drip out, ” Elijah told the boss. “It drips oil when oil is needed?
Now, match up the quote from the story that helps to describe what is happening in the picture. Explain your choices.
Pick out the picture on the next slide that matches up with the quote at the bottom of the slide. Here we go.
A C B D 1. “Grandpa was building Grandma a new house. It sat on a hill. . . ”
Here’s the match. A 1. “Grandpa was building Grandma a new house. It sat on a hill. . . ”

Here’s the match. C “The river rose until the house became an island, and we watched our neighbors’ houses wash down the river. ”
Now match up the last two pictures.
