Acrostic Poetry: An acrostic poem is one in which certain 
 letters, often the first, form a name or a 
 theme.

Exploring Different Poetic Forms Acrostic poetry is a form of short verse arranged so that the 
 initial letters of each line taken consecutively form words. 
 The basic acrostic is a poem in which the first letters of the 
 lines, read downwards, form a word, phrase, or sentence. 
 Acrostics are easy to write. First, you write vertically the 
 word or phrase, then go back and fill out the lines, using as 
 many words as you like. Here's an example: Teeth bared, they Inch forward, Growling softly, Eager to Reach the Succulent zebra dinner.

Alliterations are phrases or sentences with words that 
 repeat the same beginning consonant sounds. Example: "While I nodded, nearly napping, 
 suddenly there came a tapping. . . " -Edgar Allan Poe

Imagery Poetry: The point of this is to encourage imagery 
 and careful word choices. The images are an 
 instrument that the poet uses to express his 
 or her intentions or feelings, Understanding 
 the use of images means understanding the 
 essential meaning of the poem. Think of 
 images as useful "tools" that the poet uses in 
 order to reveal or explain the meaning that is 
 i the poem.

Epcot When I walk into the park, I smell the sugary cotton candy. I look around and see the silver ball with the sunlight reflecting off of it. I can hear the gleeful squeals of the children. Haiku Poem Japanese form of poetry. Form is 17 syllables in 3 lines with pattern; first line, 5 syllables; second line, 7 syllables; third line, 5 syllables. Usually has nature theme. Raindrops falling down On the windowpane making wonderful music. Beaches The beaches waves hit Sounding of the flood water Soothes aches all over.

Synonym poetry is a poem in which you choose synonyms and phrases to describe your theme. Choose any word. Write the word in capital letters on the first line. Find three to five synonyms for it. Write the synonyms on the second line. On the third line, write a descriptive phrase about the word. The last two lines in the poem should rhyme. LOVE Attachment, adoration, warmth, adore Love is so pure, right down to the core. NOISE Clamor, uproar, hullabaloo These things can really annoy you.

Color poetry is a poem comparing your theme to colors, and the colors to the five senses. White is like the sound of ice cubes clinking in a glass. White is like the smell of freshly picked daises from a green meadow. White is like the taste of a sweet, creamy ice cream on a hot summer day. White is like the feel of a soft, fluffy pillow comforting you to sleep.

Disney Red is like the sound of fireworks bursting in the sky. Red is like the smell of candy apples at the park. Red is like the taste of big, cherry lollipops on a stick. Red is like the feel of Minnie Mouse's polka dot skirt. Red is like the sight of Mickey ear balloons on Main Street.

Cinquain Poetry A cinquain poem has five lines. The word comes from the French cinq, which means five. These are similar to Haikus in that they are based on syllables.
